UMass Boston - Winter/Spring 2007-2008 - (Page 3) The Strategic Plan in Brief Goal : Increase student access, engagement, and success. • Objective 1: Increase enrollment to 15,000 students by 2010 while maintaining the diversity of the current student profile, and provide increased financial aid to meet a greater percentage of student need. • Objective 2: Construct new academic buildings with state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces, and provide a variety of housing options, including, but not limited to, on-campus residence halls. • Objective 3: Promote and assess best teaching practices, as well as co-curricular activities that promote student engagement. 2007-7 was a record year for grant and sponsored program awards at umass boston. $41.8 million was the total—7.9 percent above the preceding year. the last five years have seen an increase of 50.6 percent. “our reputation as a successful urban research university has never been better, and our students and the citizens of massachusetts are benefiting directly from our achievements,” says provost paul Fonteyn. two new master’s degree programs have been added to the university’s alreadyextensive list. this fall, umass boston became the only public institution in eastern massachusetts to offer an MFA program in creative writing, a “studio program” for poets and writers of fiction. in spring 2008 the first students begin the new Ms program in international management, featuring opportunities for hands-on training abroad. the newly appointed dean of the College of Science and mathematics is Andrew Grosovsky, who comes to umass boston from the university of California, riverside. grosovsky, who earned his phD at harvard, is glad to be back in boston. “it’s an exciting place to be, and i missed that,” he says. A second new dean, Carol Colbeck of the graduate College of education—a Stanford-educated Californian formerly at pennsylvania State university—is also enjoying her new job. “What we do here makes a difference in the lives of our students, and our students certainly make a difference in the lives of bostonians,” she says. A* Goal : Attract, develop, and sustain highly effective faculty. • Objective 4: Institute a career-span, institution-wide faculty development and mentoring program. (To be associated with a consistent course-release policy that will eventually result in a typical teaching assignment of two courses per semester, and an increase in the percentage of tenured and tenure-track faculty.) • Objective 5: Identify and invest in highquality undergraduate and graduate programs with strong research components, including interdisciplinary research clusters that have the capacity for growth.
