As a philanthropist, she transformed her insight into concrete action by investing in Dorchester high School at a critical moment. trefler’s philanthropy provided major momentum for the school to restructure into smaller learning communities and forged a three-way partnership between umass boston’s graduate College of education, the university’s successful pre-collegiate programs, and Dorchester high, now the Dorchester education Complex (DeC). teach Next Year, the program that emerged, simultaneously improves teaching and learning at DeC and gives teacher-preparation at umass boston a stronger urban focus. the year-long program features umass boston summer courses followed by integrated graduate study and teaching at DeC. trefler gifts have leveraged resources for teach Next Year from the Nellie mae education and Noyce Foundations, although additional funding is still needed for the program to achieve its full promise. “i am so pleased by the continuing partnership between umass boston and DeC,” says trefler. “teach Next Year, which has been a cornerstone of that partnership, has created a powerful track record in preparing teacher-leaders for urban schools. it is a legacy in which the trefler Foundation takes great pride.” A Enid K.
