i m p r oV i N g l i F e i N B OSt On Fit2lead—inspiring healthy living hen professor Kyle mcinnis (back row, far right) first met the cluster of Dorchester high schoolers on a hot July morning for a pilot program at goKids boston, the university’s new interdisciplinary youth fitness center, they were eating “breakfast”—Doritos and soda. the research director of the center knew he had a long way to go. but by the end of the summer, the eight junior fitness leaders engaged in the Fit2lead initiative had altered their eating habits and found inspiration to consider the field of exercise science as a profession. offered with the support of the boston public Schools, Fit2lead is one of several innovative health and fitness programs for at-risk, inner-city teens that goKids boston has created in partnership with hospitals, schools, and community groups. the center offers clinical investigators across multiple institutions and disciplines the chance to collaborate on developing, testing, and disseminating evidenced-based strategies to get kids more physically active. ”Fit2lead has demonstrated the tremendous potential of our center to create new protocols that promote fitness with community organizations and schools,” says mcinnis.
