One group participated in UMass Boston’s first foreign-study program in India. At the Jaypee School of Business, one of the country’s premier institutions, they took classes and prepared presentations with Indian peers and heard guest lectures by high-level Indian government officials and leaders in private industry; they capped their trip with a visit to the Taj Mahal (right). A second group—shown above at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China—studied entrepreneurship with Chinese executives at Tsinghua University. “We are Boston’s public business school, and that requires a focus on developing business leaders who can look at the Massachusetts economy with a global perspective,” says College of Management Dean Philip Quaglieri, who also reports that his college has been chosen by the Princeton Review for inclusion in the 2008 edition of Best 290 Business Schools. T A Record Grant for Lifelong Learning $2.1 million from the Bernard Osher Foundation— the largest non-research grant in the university’s history—will give a major boost to two UMass Boston programs: the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning, which offers non-credit courses, lunchtime discussions, field trips, and other educational opportunities for retirees; and the Osher Reentry Scholarship Program, which sponsors scholarships for older undergraduates whose studies have been interrupted by circumstances beyond their control. An additional $1 million from the Massachusetts Public Higher Education Endowment Incentive Program will match the grant, creating a total endowment of $3 million.
