144 Graduate Catalog 2010-2012 Education: Teacher Education school areas offer further subspecialties in terms of subject-matter concentrations. While the Initial Licensure Track consists primarily of courses in pedagogy, completion of the middle and secondary programs is conditional on meeting a fieldof-knowledge requirement, normally through presentation of an undergraduate major in the field to be taught. In addition to course work, the tracks require 75 to 84 hours of monitored pre-practicum, half of which must be completed in an urban setting with an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student population, and a semester-long practicum with accompanying portfolio. A 24-credit Graduate Certificate with Initial Licensure is also available at the middle/ secondary level, consisting of 18 credits of course work and the practicum. Candidates for Professional Licensure at UMass Boston are trained to demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and dispositions to become thoughtful and responsive educators in command of an advanced body of knowledge in their subject area. Recognizing that the role of the professional educator is to transmit complex ideas and knowledge in developmentally appropriate contexts, the College of Education and Human Development has structured its requirements so that our graduates will have the ability to convey a deep understanding of their specific field of knowledge to their students. A teacher holding an initial license in Massachusetts may obtain professional licensure in the College of Education and Human Development either through the 36-credit MEd Track with Professional Licensure or—if he/she already holds an advanced degree—through the 18-credit Post-Master’s Certificate with Professional Licensure. In both programs, half of the credits (18 and 9, respectively) must be taken at the graduate level in the relevant academic discipline. Please note: The Initial License is good for five years of employment. At the end of that time, the additional work required for Professional Licensure must be completed. The Professional License must be renewed every five years. Recertification will require “professional development points” and the payment of a recertification fee. Official policies regarding the recertification of educational personnel are published in a booklet available from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, 75 Pleasant Street, Malden, Massachusetts 02148-4906 or at http:// www.doe.mass.edu. Student Performance on the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure: During the 2009-2010 academic year, the University of Massachusetts Boston teacher education summary pass rate was 100%. All students must pass all MTEL exams prior to entering the practicum. One in mediation, dialogue, and collaboration (e.g., DISRES 624; CRCRTH 616, 618) One in urban and social justice education (e.g., EDC G 606, 672; CRCRTH 627). The choice of core courses must be recommended by the student‘s advisor and approved by the program director. Seven additional courses, focused on a specific area of interest (21 cr.) Information is available on suitable upcoming courses at http://candi.wikispaces. umb.edu/LTETtrack. Two upper-level undergraduate courses may be approved by the program director to be counted toward this requirement. Students with specific areas of interest that match another master’s program or graduate certificate listed in this bulletin/catalog are encouraged to contact that program for advice and to be assigned an LTET advisor from that program. Students may transfer credits from a UMass Boston certificate program into the nonlicensure MEd track (subject to the usual condition for transfer credits that the grade must be B or higher). This option is especially relevant for students from the following certificate programs: Applied Behavioral Analysis Critical and Creative Thinking Instructional Technology for Educators Science in a Changing World Teaching Writing in the Schools A final written paper or comprehensive examination addressing significant issues in contemporary education and reflecting the study and research each student has carried out in pursuit of the degree. Program Leading to a Degree Without Licensure The Master’s in Education track in Learning, Teaching, and Educational Transformation (non-licensure) allows students to pursue diverse inquiries and practical projects building on a foundation in curriculum development, research and writing, and collaborative action for change and social justice through education. Because this track is designed for individuals who do not wish to be certified in Massachusetts (or who are already certified), it helps students work in a broad range of education-related professions including those outside of classroom teaching, such as adult- and community-based education, educational research, policy analysis, philanthropy, and advocacy. With assistance from a faculty advisor, students design a sequence of education-related courses to support their specific interests. The current faculty advisors have special interests and experience in Asian-American Studies, ethnic studies, urban studies, curriculum studies, teachers as writers, applied behavior analysis, critical and creative thinking, science in its social context, and education in technologymediated environments. Degree requirements Master of Education Track without Licensure: MEd Track in Learning, Teaching, and Educational Transformation Students in the MEd Track in Learning, Teaching, and Educational Transformation (Non-Licensure) MEd Track without Licensure will complete a program composed of thirty-three credits of course work and a final comprehensive examination. Requirements are as follows: Four core courses (12 cr.): One in curriculum organization and innovation (e.g., EDC G 630, 642, 660; CRCRTH 601, 602, 630, 640, 645, 652; BWPEDU 510) One in research and writing for reflective practice (e.g., EDCG 621, 689, 690; CRCRTH 611, 692, 693; BWPEDU 501, 530) Master of Education Track with Initial Licensure: Early Childhood Education/ Teacher of Children with and without Disabilities, PreK–2 The Early Childhood (ECHD) graduate teacher education program leading to initial licensure, PreK–2, is a 37-credit program that consists of 13 required courses. The 13-course sequence includes a 1-credit prepracticum and a 3-credit full-time practicum. The program is designed to be completed full-time in a four-semester sequence. It is divided into four segments, or cores, at the end of which students must demonstrate competencies that allow them to pass on to the next level. http://candi.wikispaces.umb.edu/LTETtrack http://candi.wikispaces.umb.edu/LTETtrack http://www.doe.mass.edu http://www.doe.mass.edu
