Education: Teacher Education 153 Education: Teacher Education EDC G 626 Integrating Social Studies, Language Arts, and Arts ECHD 630 Technology for All Young Children This course is designed to engage prospective teachers in developing philosophical perspectives and practical approaches to teaching art, social studies, and language arts. Critical thinking about issues in art, social studies, and language arts education, including curriculum, instruction, and assessment, is integral to this course. Special emphasis is given to practices that are responsive to the needs and strengths of elementary students in social groups, classrooms, and schools. 3 Credits EDC G 628 Community, School, and Classroom Structures This course explores school and classroom structures that are relevant to teachers preparing to teach in urban middle and high schools. It also explores relationships between school and community that can be crucial to creating an effective learning environment in urban classrooms. The course includes three main parts: 1) a study of school/community collaboration in urban settings; 2) a look at the history of American middle and high school structures, including those that are currently being tried as ways of improving on the traditional models; and 3) an exploration of possible ways for structuring classrooms to achieve effective learning environments for all students, including a focus on the inclusion model and a study of various classroom management approaches. A field-based component is required. 3 Credits This course provides an examination of learning outcomes, instructional methods and materials used from Early Childhood to Second Grade (PreK-2) in instructional technology. Students learn how to apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to curriculum, instruction, and assessment to support all children in natural environments. Software for early literacy development in young children is introduced. Students have ‘hands-on’ time to master the use of basic hardware (e.g., printer, scanner, and digital camera) and software. Adaptations for special needs children are reviewed (e.g., switch options and construction). The use of Augmentative or Adaptive Communication (AAC) systems is reviewed and students learn how to integrate their use across the curriculum. Students also learn how to increase family participation and foster family knowledge of technology use with their children. 3 Credits native modes of school organization and administration. 3 Credits ECHD 640 Language Development and Literacy in Early Childhood EDC G 630 Inclusion, K-12 This course looks at language development from infants through primary-aged children. Topics will include speech and language processes for communication, language development stages, theories of language acquisition, assessment of language development and activities in order to foster language development. Special attention will be paid to linguistically diverse populations as well as to children whose language development is different from the reference group with regards to the most recent advances in the field. Selection and development of pre-reading/prewriting and reading and writing curricula for preschool, kindergarten and primary grades will be addressed. There will be an emphasis on development of literacy in the primary grades that employs a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach. The course includes 10 hours of clinical experiences. 3 Credits EDC G 629 Foundations of Middle School Teaching This course is the foundation of the middle school program. It covers middle school philosophy, curriculum, and instruction; preadolescent development; and assessment. In the fall, it is held at a cooperating middle school, co-taught by school and CEHD faculty. Students may combine the seminar with 75 hours of directed field work at our partner middle school, gaining direct experience with middle school children, curriculum, and instructional methods. In the spring, the course is taught on campus, as a regular 3-credit graduate course. 6 Credits (with field experience) or 3 Credits (for the course alone) This course examines the theoretical and practical issues that teachers must address as they implement the effective inclusion of children with disabilities in general education classrooms. Topics include the legal foundations of inclusion; appropriate strategies for supporting the academic, behavioral, and social aspects of inclusive teaching; and strategies for productive interactions with other educators and parents. The course’s central premise is that inclusion requires collective attention to individual needs within the general education program. Participants become familiar with the roles of the general education teacher in special education, develop learning and behavior plans to address student needs, and acquire practice in analyzing school activities to maximize effective participation by a range of students. The course includes a field experience component. 3 Credits EDC G 640 Reading in the Content Areas This course familiarizes participants with developmental reading techniques appropriate for students using various textual materials. Attention is given to the integration and application of reading and study skills in a number of content areas. Field-based observations are required. 3 Credits ECHD 641 Science and Mathematics Instruction for All Young Children EDC G 636 Individually Guided Education This course stresses the adaptation of various instructional methods to individual differences and the continuous improvement of such instruction. The course examines new forms of behavior for teachers, various learning options for students based on their mapped cognitive styles, and alter- This course reviews developmental theory and research as related to the curriculum areas. A foundation for selection and design of curriculum materials and activities appropriate for children in kindergarten and primary grades is discussed and documented via student products. Fundamental concepts and skills for teaching math and science to young children are practiced, as well as optimum, hands-on pedagogical methods and those derived from Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Math and science developmentally appropriate activities for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and primary children are practiced during a 10hour clinical experience. 3 Credits
