Nursing 223 Nursing on the intersection of nursing, health policy, and population health, and prepares its graduates for leadership as policy analysts, researchers, and educators. Goals for the Health Policy Track: Analyze the historical, sociological, economic, political, and nursing perspectives of existing and proposed health policies. Inform and evaluate health policies that influence the access, quality, and cost of healthcare services through the use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Conduct theory-guided research that advances understanding of the intersection of nursing and health policy. Influence the development of health policies at local, state, national, and international levels. prerequisite to admission to candidacy for the PhD degree. In the third year, students complete electives and research courses related to completion of the doctoral dissertation. Full-time students should complete the program in four years. Part-time students are required to register for 6 credits per semester and should complete the program in 5 or 6 years. The Major Advisor and the Dissertation Committee: An academic advisor and research mentor are assigned for each entering PhD student. Early in the semester NURSNG 791 is taken, students select their dissertation committee chair and members; the committee must be approved by the graduate program director. Dissertation Preparation/Advisement NURSNG 791 (Integrating Theory and Policy in Dissertation Research), 3 Credits NURSNG 899 (Dissertation Research), 9 Credits Comprehensive Exam Two papers of publishable quality in the respective areas of emphasis: Health Policy and Population Health. Electives (Normally chosen from courses offered on the UMass Boston and collaborating UMass Lowell campuses to support dissertation research), 9 Credits Research and Quantitative and Qualitative Methods Courses NURSING 760 (Biostatistics I), 3 Credits or PPOL G 604 (Statistics I ) NURSING 797 (Biostatistics II), 3 Credits or PPOL G 605 (Statistics II) NURSING 720 (Secondary Data Analysis), 3 credits NURSING 797 (Mixed Methods), 3 Credits NURSING 797 (Epidemiology), 3 Credits (for Population Health Track only) One course (for Population Health Track) and two courses (for Health Policy Track) in advanced statistics and/or research methods, 3 or 6 Credits BS-to-PhD Tracks The BS-to-PhD Tracks are 87-credit programs designed for outstanding baccalaureate-trained prepared nurses without a master’s degree. Students in the BS-to-PhD tracks are required to study full-time and in an intensive, accelerated program requiring completion of 15 credits in each of the student’s first three semesters. The curriculum incorporates a didactic emphasis and a clinical specialization in oncology. Goals for the Population Health Track: Analyze the historical, sociological, economic, political, and nursing perspectives of population health problems and existing and proposed health policies. Evaluate and critique health policies that influence the access, quality, and cost of healthcare services. Conduct theory-guided qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research that advances knowledge of and informs innovative solutions to population health problems and health policies. Influence the development of innovative solutions to population health problems and health policies at local, state, national, and international levels. Requirements for the BS-to-PhD Tracks include: Research and Quantitative and Qualitative Methods Courses NURSING 760 (Biostatistics I), 3 Credits or PPOL G 604 (Statistics I ) NURSING 797 (Biostatistics II), 3 Credits or PPOL G 605 (Statistics II) NURSING 720 (Secondary Data Analysis), 3 credits NURSING 797 (Mixed Methods), 3 Credits NURSING 797 (Epidemiology), 3 Credits (for Population Health Track only) One course in advanced statistics and/or research methods, 3 Credits Core Courses NURSNG 701L (Science as a Way of Knowing, Philosophy of Science), 3 Credits NURSING 750 (Contemporary Disciplinary Knowledge), 3 credits Degree Requirements Post-Master’s MS-to-PhD Tracks The Post-Master’s Tracks of the PhD in Nursing requires 60 credits beyond the MS degree. For full-time students, the program normally requires three years of course work and the dissertation. Courses include health policy/population health and economics, research methods, and statistics. Courses are offered by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and a number of collaborating departments at UMass Boston and other four UMass Lowell campuses. After completing core courses, students undertake a 6-credit policy/population health internship, followed by a qualifying comprehensive examination.
