SAMLE students chose diversity as a focus and planned sessions to increase awareness and acceptance of diversity. Their theme was “E Pluribus Unum,” which means “Out of Many…One.” The conference was partially funded through SAMLE fund-raising activities and a grant from the Cedar Valley Community Foundation. SAMLE advisors are Schneider and Donna Douglas, associate professor, Curriculum & Instruction. Members of the UNI Student Association of Middle Level Educators T he middle level education program at UNI offers numerous experiences outside the classroom to its 190 students. These students are enrolled in a dual major of middle level education/elementary education. Last spring, 22 UNI pre-service teachers seeking the Middle School Teacher Endorsement participated in the People-to-People Ambassadors Program in Washington D.C. UNI students have participated since 2005. The program promotes “peace through understanding” by connecting people and cultures. UNI students spent nine days working with groups of 10-12 middle level aged student leaders during the World Leadership Forums for students with the potential to become future leaders. The UNI undergraduates were trained to be facilitators to supervise the middle school children on many field trips and ensure that the participants completed the leadership/history curriculum. Jean Schneider, assistant professor of Curriculum & Instruction, initiated and secured this partnership for UNI, one of four universities nation-wide to participate. More than 50 students each semester are active members the Student Association of Middle Level Educators (SAMLE), a professional organization.
