The University of Northern Iowa College of Education - Fall 2007 - (Page 16) UNI College of Education Excellence Highlight Department in Teacher Education Department of Special Education T his department has been involved for nearly three decades in preparing professionals to serve persons with disabilities. Programs are offered at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. Enrollment includes 497 undergraduate and 143 graduate students. Led by Sandra Alper, interim department head, faculty respond to the demand for qualified special education personnel to fill a wide range of teaching and human service positions. The undergraduate students benefit from the partnerships the department maintains with practicing professionals and model practicum sites. Special education graduates are highly competitive in the job market with a 99% rate of employment in Iowa and in other states. Faculty members also serve the state by providing in-service and other professional development needs. One example of this is the ongoing cooperative project with local education agencies for Iowa teachers who are not fully certified in special education. UNI faculty supervise the practicum experiences for 200-300 teachers in their home schools. Department members continue to contribute to the special education scientific knowledge base through research and model demonstration projects disseminated through scholarly publications and conferences. The Special Education WeBCATT’s office provides access to technology, services and training to participating families of students with disabilities. 16 Fall 2007 www.uni.edu/coe/specialed/
