She is a retired professor of physical education from the University of Northern Colorado. Melvin Locke, BA ‘49, is a retired principal from La Serna High School, Whittier, CA and a retired marine lieutenant colonel. A World War II and Korean War veteran, he earned nine air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross medal. Russell Wiley, BA ‘63, MA ’67, received the 2006 Regents Award for Faculty Excellence from the Iowa Board of Regents. Wiley retired in 2006 as assistant professor of Chemistry at UNI. UNI College of Education 1990s Donna Ricks, MA ‘92, was inducted into the Iowa High School Speech Association’s Hall of Fame. She is an English and speech teacher at DikeNew Hartford Schools. April Krob, BA ’96, was named Galaxy Middle School 2008 Teacher of the Year in Deltona, FL. She teaches 6th grade geography and said her dream college was the University of Northern Iowa, “one of the best teaching colleges in the Midwest.” Her passion for teaching and engaging her students carries over into her personal life when she and her husband, Jeff, decided to adopt a Chinese girl after Krob’s students researched and debated China’s one-child policy. She earned an M.A. in education from Nova Southern University (2001) and National Board certification in early adolescent social studies/history in 2002. 1970s Margaret (Prince) Brinton, BA ‘71, published her fourth teacher resource book, 101 Lessons: Vocabulary Words in Context, Grades 6-8. She lives in San Diego. Jacqueline (Hood) Bruner, BA, retired from teaching and administration to become a supervisor in special education and compliance at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Andrew Jackson Sr., MA ‘76, published James A. Banks and the Evolution of Multicultural Education: Implications for Teacher Educators and Curriculum Development. He is a professor in the College of Education at Penn State University and a cochapter liaison member for Phi Delta Kappa International Office Region 1. 1950s Robert Balsley, BA ‘58, MA ’70, has taught math for 47 years, both in Webster City and at Iowa Central Community College. He’s also been Webster City mayor and city council member, and served on the Hamilton County Board of Supervisors. Carl Miller, BA ‘58, has retired, and had served as a counselor, teacher, high school principal and supervisor in schools in Arizona, Texas and California. He lives in Calimesa, CA. 2000s Aimee (Rasmusson) Klostermann, BA ‘00, is an assistant coordinator for the UNI Child Development Center. Lillie Rose Moore, MA ‘05, teaches 9-12th-graders in special education with mental disabilities at Washington High School, Cedar Rapids. 1960s David Long, BA ‘61, was tapped as California’s secretary of education by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Long was formerly superintendent of Riverside County Schools. Serving more than four decades as an educator, Long has worked as a classroom teacher, athletic coach and school principal. He holds a doctorate in education administration from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in physical education from Missouri State College. Linda (Andrews) Thompson, BA ‘61, who co-owns Puzzled Parents Press, San Luis Obispo, CA, has co-authored a book, Math for Puzzled Parents. 1980s Susan Koch, MA ‘86, EdD ’89, is the new provost and vice president for academic affairs at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI. She had been UNI associate provost and dean of the graduate college. Deb Vangellow, ’86 BA, was named one of Golf For Women Magazine’s “Top 50 Teachers” in the country. She is director of instruction at Sweetwater Country Club, Sugar Land, TX.
