UNI College of Education Excellence in Teacher Student ResearchEducation Three graduate students in the UNI school psychology program are investigating the critical shortage of school psychologists at the state and national level to understand reasons for the shortage and help develop better methods to recruit and retain school psychologists. Melissa Gent, school psychology intern, Des Moines Public School System, and Erin McCoy and Sara Recker, school psychology interns at Heartland Education Agency, are completing individual research projects focusing on job satisfaction, retention issues, and why positions are unfilled. Faculty advisors are Kerri Clopton, Charlotte Haselhuhn, and Barry Wilson. PLS students visit with school counselor UNI student offers computer help in PLS classroom Brandy Smith, MA ‘07, education technology, developed a model for peer tutoring of technology skills as part of her masters in educational technology degree. Project results showed the Tech Club of student tutors empowered themselves and other students to achieve district technology standards, and improved students’ self-perceptions as technology learners. Smith discussed results of this after-school program for third grade classrooms in her article “Inspiring Students with Peer Tutoring” published in Learning and Leading with Technology, the online magazine of ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education). Smith is an instructor at Hawkeye Community College and runs her own day care.
