The University of Northern Iowa College of Education - Fall 2007 - (Page 3) Excellence in Teacher Education UNI College of Education Message from the Dean Welcome to the UNI College of Education’s second E-magazine promoting “Excellence in Teacher Education.” The first E-magazine published last spring received a great response. With this issue, I hope the new format via e-mail will help you link to articles of interest more readily. I also hope you’ll learn how the College of Education continues its tradition of educating well-prepared teachers. As dean, I look forward to the upcoming academic year and involvement with the many new initiatives underway in the College. Some of the following examples are featured in this E-magazine, and you’ll hear about others in coming issues. ٠ Early Childhood Education - Highlights under this College initiative include forming collaborative partnerships with the National Program for Playground Safety Program; Head Start, private and public daycare providers; Camp Adventures’ new early childhood initiative; the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) for evaluator training; Early Childhood Education summits, and Iowa’s new universal pre-school legislation. ٠ Math and science education initiatives that MPLS leads statewide. ٠ Professional Development School pilot program to expand students’ field experiences and strengthen local school partnerships. ٠ Price Lab School’s work in high school reform. ٠ New partnership with the Community Olympic Development Program. As we consider the many educational activities in the College, we thank the Iowa State Legislature for its support of education during the 2007 session, and look forward to working with them in the next session. We also want to thank AFSCME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees) for their support of university-related legislation. The College management team is completed and, with them, I believe we’ll enjoy a highly productive year. Bill Callahan, Dean Fall 2007 3 http://www.uni.edu/coe/
