The University of Northern Iowa College of Education - Fall 2007 - (Page 7) Excellence in Teacher Education universities that prepare teachers,” said Countryman, associate professor, Department of Teaching and Department of Biology. UNI was designated the lead institution because it has the largest number of dedicated faculty to teacher education in math and science of Regents institutions and graduates the most teachers (undergraduate and graduate levels) in the state, explained Jody Stone, also a member of the UNI math and science internal working group. Stone is an associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Department of Chemistry. Countryman and Stone believe UNI is an appropriate choice to lead the initiative because of the leadership faculty members have already taken in science and math education. UNI students in K-8 science and math education take courses that relate directly to the Iowa Department of Education’s initiatives for math and science professional development, said Countryman. The two initiatives are Every Learner Inquires and Every Student Counts. “UNI’s courses teach pre-service students how to teach using inquiry methods which the faculty member models. We believe this approach improves the transition from pre-service teaching to in-service teaching and can increase teacher retention rates.” A recent article from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) explained other reasons for the nationwide shortage of math and science teachers, Stone said. Math and science teachers leave the education profession because of job dissatisfaction with lack of funding to run their program (especially in science), not enough professional support, and low wages.
