The January PMI hit 35.6%, up 2.7 points but significantly lower than the 50% threshold indicating expansion. New orders jumped 10.1 points to 33.2%, while production increased 5.8 points to 32.1%. Inventories dropped 2.1 points to 37.5%, and customer inventories dipped 1.5 points to 55.5%. Backlogs increased to 29.5%, a surge of 6.5 percentage points compared to December. Sept. Sales were up just 1.7% in 2008, the firm added. Excess inventories from the 2008 Christmas selling season will also be a drag on sales. Cellphones and computers will be exceptions. Also, game consoles are likely to achieve a gain of 10% this year. Global vehicle production fell 3% in 2008. US output plummeted 19.8% and West European production was down 10.3%. Even though electronics content is steadily rising in cars and trucks, cost containment is a major issue among auto OEMs, says Henderson. Consequently, automotive electronics output managed a thin 0.4% increase in 2008, versus a 10.1% surge in 2007. Report: CE Output to Drop 6.4% in 2009 Crash Costs Drive ADAS Sales eL seGundo, ca – Worldwide Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) sales are expected to soar to 56.3 million in 2013, a CAGR of 26.6%, from 17.3 million in 2008. ADAS’s target the auto safety market, where accidents in 2003 incurred $231 billion worth of damage. These “safety cocoons” promise to mitigate the global car-crash catastrophe by aiding motorists in their overall driving with features ranging from blind-spot detection to adaptive cruise control, says iSuppli Corp., which released the data.
