Solutions 2009 - (Page 55) 55 The University of Tennessee University Center (UTUC) The University of Tennessee University Center (UTUC) offers business assistance to firms in targeted communities through its partnership with the Economic Development Administration (EDA). To qualify for UTUC assistance, a company must be able to predict significant economic impacts resulting from sponsored UTUC projects. Such impacts include increased sales, increased employment, higher average wages per employee or avoided costs. CIS-UC-UCT-IP-002709-1 SERVIcES OFFERED • Competitiveness Assessments The EDA University Center can support one or two days of time for CIS staff to assess the company on-site, determine the type of assistance needed and provide the company a brief written report. • Direct Technical Assistance UTUC may underwrite part of the cost of technical assistance delivered to a company. Types of assistance include Lean manufacturing, quality systems, human performance technology, supply chain logistics, government procurement processes, occupational safety, and environmental health and safety. • Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Proposal Assistance UTUC will provide technical assistance for Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 2 Plus SBIR/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) proposals in targeted locations in the state. • new Product Development and Commercialization Center (nPDCC) UTUC, through the New Product Development and Commercialization Center, will provide technical and product development assistance to individuals or companies bringing a new product to market or commercializing an existing or new technology. • Training UTUC will market, develop and deliver training on topics that assist companies with economic development. Proposal writing or technology training on nanotechnology or radio frequency identification are among potential topics.
