Great Basin Ski Trip
My wife and I are
retired ski bums from
the Bay Area. Last
winter we were on our
way to Utah to ski our
favorite resorts, with
that fantastic Utah
powder! This time,
rather than flying, we
decided to drive the
“Loneliest Road in America,” U.S. Highway 50, across the
Great Basin. It had been on our radar for a while, so we
packed our ski gear and headed out across the wide open
AmericanWest. After photographing the stark natural
beauty of Nevada’s Great Basin National Park, we
checked into our hotel near the Utah border. Seeing our ski
rack, the front desk clerk asked if we were heading to the
“new ski resort in Utah?” That night, I looked up on the
Internet that a new resort called Eagle Point had opened
on the grounds of an old ski area in the Tushar Mountains,
just outside of Beaver. We decided to check it out the
next day! Up early, we arrived at the resort mid-morning
and enjoyed a days-worth of runs and some fantastic
après-ski at the refurbished lodge. It’s not every day you
get to hit a new resort! When discussing our free-wheeling
vacation that day, a lift mate suggested we should swing
over to the Snow Goose Festival in Delta on the way up
to Salt Lake. The next day, we were photographing the
thousands of majestic geese on their winter migration just
outside that charming Utah town. It’s amazing what you can
find – when you let the locals guide you!

They still call
Salt Lake City, the
“Crossroads of the
West,” where pioneer
trails, the railroad, Pony
Express riders and the
first cross-country auto
travelers of the old
Lincoln Highway
passed through.We
wanted to get a glimpse of what these early travelers might
have faced, so we headed to Central Utah’sWest Desert
for a backway road trip.We drove east on I-80 from Reno
and stayed our first night inWendover, where we visited
Historic Wendover Airfield, theWorldWar II home of
the famous Enola Gay bomber. Early the next morning, we
headed west out of town to the turnoff to the ghost town
of Ibapah where we witnessed the historic trails at the
Deep Creek Pony Express Monument. From there,
we backtracked a bit and headed east on the trail passing
historic markers along the way to the ghost town of Callao,
then drove farther north passing more markers to Fish
Springs National Wildlife Refuge where we picnicked
and identified the migrating birds at the desert oasis. Next,
we drove east again, passing the sites of Black Rock,
Dugway, and Riverbed Pony Express Stations, until
we arrived at Simpson Springs which has an intact Pony
Express station, a desert pond, and great campground.
We continued on to Rush Valley, where we hit the paved
road and drove to Camp Floyd Stagecoach Inn State
Park for a visit to the historic military museum. While the
ride was winding and a bit dusty, the scenery and history
made the trip a great road trip we won't soon forget!
