We live in Las Vegas, and we visit Utah a couple of
times a year to see family. Over the years we have
traveled I-15 north through the state so many times
that most of the family has all the exits memorized!
This summer, we decided to take a different route.
We chose to drive historic US 89 though the Mormon
Pioneer National Heritage Area.We exited
I-15 northbound at SR 20 north of Cedar City. Up
over a pass, the road joined US 89 in a wide open
valley.We headed north through the small towns of
Circleville, Junction, and Marysvale. In Marysvale,
we took a short drive up to the Fishlake National
Forest and enjoyed a short morning hike on the
Silver King Mine Interpretive Trail, which highlights
the rich mining history of the area.We enjoyed
a nice lunch in Richfield and then headed north up
through the Sanpete County towns of Gunnison
and Manti (the Manti Temple is a stunning building
overlooking the valley). The architectural highlight of
the trip was the original Mormon Pioneer-era homes
of Spring City. Many of these small stone buildings
have been carefully restored to their original condition.
Ephraim and Mount Pleasant are also two
historically significant pioneer era towns with
original structures indicative of the area. On the way
northward toward the Wasatch Front, we drove the
Mount Nebo National Scenic Byway, a fantastic
alpine loop that allows for views of mountain lakes
and Devil's Kitchen, a mini Bryce Canyon-like
formation right off the side of the road!
