Floating the San Rafael – WILLIE HOLDMAN
I’m a rock art
fanatic. This
year, my goal
was to
experience
Utah’s famous
NineMile
Canyon. It was
an easy drive
to Wellington
from Denver on I-70. We were able to take quick
stops at Thompson Springs to view the rock art of
Sego Canyon on the way out and back. NineMile
Canyon, however, was the heart of the trip. The
canyon is a literal outdoor museum. Measuring closer
to 40 miles long (instead of nine) it houses more
than 10,000 unique glyphs, some over 8,000 years
old, pecked or painted onto natural rock walls.
We booked a three-day stay at a B&B dude ranch
north of Wellington and had the time of our lives.
Between horse trips, Dutch oven meals, and nights
snoozing in a teepee for two adventurous days, we
visited over a dozen major panel sites and viewed
granaries perched on sheer cliffs hundreds of feet in
the air. I shot hundreds of photographs and filled two
sketchbooks with my drawings. I didn't want to leave,
but on the way home we enjoyed a beautiful mild
spring day at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur
Quarry, a repository of dinosaur fossils millions of
years in the making.
