Sequel - Fall 2007 - (Page 13) at our best RODEO TEAM TAKES SECOND IN NATION Placing first at the National Finals Rocky Mountain Region Championships, the UVSC Rodeo Team entered the Collegiate National Finals Rodeo competition ready to rope and ride. Unfortunately, winning the top spot just wasn’t in the cards for this group of cowboys and cowgirls; though their shot at the title was a very near miss. Beating more than 100 schools to take a second-place seat at nationals is still a campfire story worth telling. And Coach Lewis Feild tipped his hat to the team for its hard work and top performance at the Casper, Wyo., event. A highlight of the event was when Taylor White, of Richfield, Utah, and Budd Munns of Tremonton, Utah, captured second-place national awards. White, a UVSC sophomore, took second place all-around with a third-place win of 228 points in bull-riding. Munns took second place in bareback riding with 321 points, and Riley Probst of Heber City, Utah, excelled in calf and team roping. Slade Hughes of Veyo, Utah, and Nick Tydalch of Stockton, Utah, both received honors in saddle bronc. “It was an all-around good team effort,” Munns said. “And winning second seat is something we can all be proud to hang our hat on.” In addition to the team’s second-place win, UVSC’s Lana Bingham, competitive in goat tying, was named Walt Garrison winner of a $5,000 scholarship and a notable belt buckle. Bingham, an elementary education major studying at Wasatch Campus, is student regional director for the National Collegiate Rodeo Assoc. for the Rocky Mountain Region. HOME ON THE RANGE: BUD MUNNS TOOK SECOND PLACE IN BAREBACK RIDING, ADDING 321 POINTS TO THE TEAM’S ALL-AROUND SCORE. A ROSE IS A ROSE … BUT NOT FOR ALEX CALDIERO In addition to teaching Humanities and Ethics and Values, Philosophy Artist in Residence Alex Caldiero is also co-host to a new, monthly radio show titled, “Poetry Is Wanted Here,” on Utah’s 88.3 and 105.3 FM. The show features Caldiero and co-host Ken Sanders as they explore themecentered poetry. Recent themes have included poetry of war, Utah poetry, and, of course, the poetry of love. Caldiero says he does not like to refer to the broadcast as a “poetry reading” show. “As an artist, I don’t read,” he says. “I prefer the term ‘performance.’” It is Caldiero’s interpretation of poetry that makes him a favorite among students. In fact, students are the reason Caldiero, technically considered a “visiting” scholar, has chosen to stay. – Alexis Rich SEQUEL YOUR WAY VIDEO PODCAST To hear or download free Sequel podcasts, go online to www.uvsc.edu/alumni, or to the iTunes Store and search “UVSC Sequel.” PHOTO BY STEVEN STONE PHOTO BY STEVEN STONE utah valley state college alumni magazine FA L L 2 0 0 7 13 . http://www.uvsc.edu/alumni
