Paul Giles knows what it takes to keep things green. And he does it well. Once a caretaker of trees at UVSC, Giles now works as sports field specialist – meaning he is responsible for keeping the institution’s playing fields topnotch green. Giles was recognized as Pioneer League Turf Manager of the Year for his care and maintenance of the College’s Brent Brown Ballpark and received an honorary trip to Florida to accept the award. “I feel like this award has been significant in enhancing the College’s position for becoming a university,” Giles said. “The ballpark is a good place for families, and I feel extremely satisfied that the care I put into its appearance is genuinely appreciated.” PHOTO BY STEVEN STONE NEW EDITION COMING SOON Projected to be among the most modern facilities of its kind, the new campus library will offer a compendium of learning resources including digital media, online journals, multimedia study rooms, and interactive as well as traditional reference resources. The library’s grand opening is scheduled to coincide with the College’s transition to university status in July 2008. Larger than the McKay Events Center, the building will stand five stories tall and occupy 190,000 square feet of campus space. Key features will include a fifth-floor computer center and a ground-level café. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD GOES TO OUTSTANDING ADMINISTRATOR J. Karl Worthington, Ph.D., associate vice president of academic affairs and former interim vice president of academic affairs, has been selected as recipient of the 2007 Wolverine Lifetime Achievement Award. KARL WORT H INGT O N “This prestigious award is presented annually to an individual who has excelled academically and professionally and has displayed outstanding leadership skills during his or her career at UVSC,” said Andrew Stone, 2006-2007 student body president. “Dr. Worthington is one of the institution’s core employees and has been instrumental in building a founda- tion for quality and success. His contributions have helped prepare the institution for success in areas of accreditation and university status.” Prior to joining UVSC in 1975, Worthington worked at Ball State University (Indiana), Bowling Green State University (Ohio), University of Iowa and Northern Arizona University. Worthington has been fundamental in developing and implementing each of the College’s 56 baccalaureate degrees, among many other significant contributions to the development of quality academic programs.
