Sequel - Spring 2008 - (Page 11) FACE S BY BRENDA JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB SCOTT COLLEEN VAWDREY Colleen Vawdrey, professor of business management, was a student at Jordan High School, when she knew she wanted to be a teacher. Vawdrey, who has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in business education from BYU and a Ph.D. from Utah State University, has been a professor for more than 20 years and was originally hired to teach at Utah Technical College (UTC). “It’s been exciting to see all of the changes in the School of Business,” she said, “And it will be exciting to see where it goes from here.” In addition to being involved in professional organizations such as The Western Business Education Association, Vawdrey also spends time acting as adviser of business-oriented student groups. She is the adviser for UVSC’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), also known as Phi Beta Lambda, and is adviser for Delta Epsilon Chi, which is the college division of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Because of her involvement in these student groups, she has traveled the country, observing students as they compete across the U.S. “Watching the competitions is exciting,” she said. “It’s so fulfilling to watch students succeed and win national awards.” JIM HARRIS When Jim Harris, professor of biology, started his undergraduate work at BYU, he was originally looking to the skies, studying zoology and ornithology, the study of birds. But once he took a class in botany, he started setting his sights a little lower, so to speak. Harris received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in botany from BYU, and received his Ph.D. in the same from the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He’s been teaching biology and botany to students at UVSC since 1986. At that time, of course, he was teaching at UTC, and the biology department was what he calls a “peripheral part” of the campus. Since he was hired, the biology faculty has grown from three faculty members to around 20, and it’s a faculty that he’s proud to be a part of. With UVSC’s addition of a bachelor’s degree in biology, Harris has enjoyed the opportunity to involve students in his research. Through his research on plants in the mustard family, he has discovered, classified and named five new subspecies of plants. “It’s been a very fulfilling part of my job,” he said. “I’m glad I can continue my research while I’m teaching and that I can involve my students in something I enjoy.” 11 Although Teeter claims that he “works to play,” and that coming in to teach is what he enjoys doing with his spare time, he does find time to travel with his family. Together, they have traveled more than 150 thousand miles in the United States and have visited every state in the union more than once. Teeter has also traveled to Mexico, Belize, China, Russia, Mongolia, Ukraine, and goes on a yearly scuba diving trip in the Bahamas.
