Sequel - Spring 2008 - (Page 12) AARON BARTHOLOMEW THE ROOKIES: Aaron Bartholomew is an assistant professor of legal studies at UVSC and a managing partner of the Provo law firm Bartholomew Silva & Associates. Balancing both teaching and practicing law has been a challenge he’s up to, and one of the things that drew him to UVSC. He teaches an introduction to paralegal studies course, as well as other classes. Bartholomew enjoys bringing his “real world” experience to the classroom. Although he deals in a variety of legal fields, including real estate, his interest lies mainly in the legal rights of juveniles and their parents. Family is something Bartholomew has an understandable interest in—he and his wife of 11 years have six children of their own. Bartholomew also enjoys woodworking—in fact, he paid his way through law school by building and selling furniture and still keeps a woodworking shop. Retirement is a long way off for Bartholomew, but he intends on spending all the time leading up to it teaching at UVSC. “There’s a great academic culture at UVSC,” he said. “I enjoy the cooperative nature and freedom the faculty enjoy.” WILL GARROW “I hated going to school. Bar none, high school was the worst thing that ever happened to me,” said Will Garrow, assistant professor of deaf studies. “And now look at me. I’m a teacher.” What was it that brought Garrow back to the classroom? It was his interest in those around him who were deaf that eventually led him to teaching. His wife, Flavia Fleischer, who is also an assistant professor at UVSC, is deaf, and so is their 14-year-old daughter. “I’m very fortunate the deaf community has given me the privilege to be part of their culture and their world,” said Garrow. “To me, that privilege is sacred. It’s the most sacred thing in my life.” Now Garrow hopes to give back to that community by teaching. He is a graduate of Gallaudet University, which is the only university in the world that specializes in educating students who are deaf or hard of hearing. In fact, Garrow was Gallaudet’s first full-hearing undergraduate. The UVSC Deaf Studies program is something Garrow is excited about developing further. He feels the faculty and students can work together to develop better teachers for deaf children, conduct important research and help lift the oppression some deaf people face. An avid snowboarder, Garrow and his family hit the slopes on a regular basis, but that’s not what drives him. “Snowboarding is amazing,” he said. “But I would give it all up for just one day of teaching and being in the classroom.” 12 SPRING 2008 utah valley state college alumni magazine
