Herzog, from Pleasant Grove, Utah, beat out a 26-year-old PHOTO BY STEVEN STONE woman from New York and a 23-year-old hiking guide from Los Angles during the program’s finale, scheming his way through all 39 days. For more than a year, Herzog sent in audition tapes. He found out only eight days before he went to China that he was chosen for the show. A flight attendant for Southwest Airlines, Herzog admitted he probably wasn’t the most physically superior of the group, but he may have been the best planner. “I wasn’t the strongest, I wasn’t the smartest, but I was definitely the most strategic,” he said after the victory. Prior to becoming a contestant, Herzog would pack 20 to 30 of his friends in his home to watch "Survivor" every week. He would then study previous contestants' moves and motives of how they played the game. “One of my tactics was to get along with everyone,” Herzog said. Upon winning the $1 million dollar grand prize, Herzog has already bought a car and plans to travel and invest the rest. Herzog attended UVSC from 2003-2005 where he took classes in writing, journalism and film. He also participated in a Disney World internship through UVSC, but has yet to graduate. “UVSC is an excellent institution,” Herzog said. “When things settle down with press tours and the media, I may very well return to earn that degree.” UVSC STUDENTS CONDUCT RESEARCH STUDY FOR UNITED WAY Recently, seven undergraduate human resource students had an opportunity to be involved in a real-world employee survey that would also assist nonprofit agencies in Utah County. “I created an independent course, Workforce THE TRIBE HAS SPOKEN: UVSC ALUMNUS TODD HERZOG ’05 BEAT OUT OTHER CONTESTANTS ON REALITY TV’S “SURVIVOR” FOR THE $1 MILLION PRIZE.
