with LUCILLE STODDARD AND FRANK FERGUSON by Chris Taylor ‘97 photography by Jacob Scott here have been many individuals over the years that have left an indelible mark on Utah Valley University. One would be hard pressed, however, to find a couple that has collectively left a more distinct fingerprint on the institution than Frank Ferguson and Lucille Stoddard. They’re quick to deflect the credit, but the pair will go down in institutional history as two of the original architects of Utah Valley University – Frank as the literal architect of the current Orem campus and Lucille as a key player in establishing the institution’s academic foundation. Both have since moved on. After designing the likes of the BYU Jerusalem Center, Energy Solutions Arena, Abravanel Hall and others, Frank has called it a career. Lucille hasn’t quite been able to peel herself away from the world of academia and now, as associate commissioner with the Utah System of Higher Education, helps give the stamp of approval to degree programs system-wide. Neither, however, has forgotten UVSC. And although they didn’t marry until 1996, it was this very campus that brought them together in the first place. Is it fair to say this institution brought you together? FRANK: Oh, for sure. I was practicing in Salt Lake, working with my partners at Inteleki (later ffkr) on Snowbird Ski Resort when we were approached about this campus. I didn’t know the name Lucille Stoddard at all. In the first meeting, she was sitting across the table from me and said something about the master plan… LuciLLe iNseRts: I had never met him before, and I was his client. Remember that! FRANK: …And I looked across the table at her and said, “Dr. Stoddard, that’s the most indefensible statement I’ve ever heard.” There was a pregnant silence for about two seconds, and then Lucille burst out laughing, and so did everyone else. I knew I’d been had. What was it like during those early days in the 1970s when the Orem campus was first beginning to materialize? LuciLLe: Frank along with Bruce Jensen, the campus master plan architect, was responsible for campus planning, from the architecture to the landscaping. They planned the campus from a sand hill.
