Sequel - Spring 2008 - (Page 20) FRANK: Lucille was very open to new ideas. She wanted to capture a really good physical environment that would go well with an academic culture, so she was an enabler for us. Understand that this was a great big track of land, and we walked in with a master plan that had all of the buildings in close proximity to one another. In fact, they’re one building. The first criticism was, “Why are you wasting all of that land?” The normal master plan would have had buildings scattered all over the place. How did the administration welcome the original architectural concept? ping trip scheduled for the spouses. He was the first male spouse. So, did you go shopping with them? FRANK: Of course! Lucille, you’ve retired from UVSC, but you haven’t been able to pull yourself away from the world of academia. Why is that? LuciLLe: I’m doing the same things and making the FRANK: I think they were puzzled in the beginning, but I think they started to like it. In Utah, this is the only campus that has taken that direction in its design. The idea was to build it like a beehive, if you will. Whether that is a good thing or not, I guess could be argued. But my personality says I want auto mechanics and techies or nurses and artists to cross paths. LuciLLe: I fell in love with Frank’s work before I fell in love with Frank. I loved the work. I loved the ideas. I learned a lot from listening. It’s one of the four or five campuses in the nation that has maintained the integrity of the materials and the design. That’s what is unique about this campus. When the campus first moved to Orem, did either of you envision the institution would be where it is now…on the cusp of becoming a university? FRANK: No. There were 2,500 students that we were designing same decisions at the system level that I made here. And it’s a passion…that’s all I can say. You are both regulars on the dance floor at the annual President’s Scholarship Ball and your love of dancing is well documented. Who’s the better dancer? FRANK: She is. LuciLLe: I have a hard time not leading. ALUMNI AND FRIENDS MAY NOW HONOR LUCILLE FOR HER SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO UVSC BY DONATING TO THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED LUCILLE STODDARD SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Somebody walked into a meeting one day and said, “We’ve gotten approval from the Legislature to build it for 6,500.” I thought on that day, “Oh, sure.” But we went ahead on that premise, and look what’s happened. LuciLLe: Even then, we designed the campus for more students than we had been given permission to. I don’t know that I thought it would make it as fast as it has, but I did think it would be a very big, prestigious campus for two reasons. One, we worked very hard to get the best, highest quality faculty. And two, we wanted to have a curriculum that students could take and transfer successfully any place in the world. Given one of Lucille’s former titles at UVSC, interim president, that makes Frank the institution’s one and only “First Gentleman”… LuciLLe: Frank is the only male spouse (of a college/university president) ever in the history of the institution. We became well known for this. We went on a retreat once and there was a shop- 20 SPRING 2008 utah valley state college alumni magazine
