Presidents: Past & BY SCOTTY SPJUT Throughout the nearly seven decades of history surrounding UVSC, change has always been expected. During the 37 years Wilson W. Sorensen served as president, the institution went through three name changes, and the purchase of the land where the campus now sits. Previously, classes were held throughout Utah County in high schools, machine shops and car dealerships. “Relocating to Orem gave our school a chance to grow,” Sorensen said. But apart from the geographical and nominal changes, the social dynamic of the school was quite different half a century ago. “School was more of a family affair back then,” said William White, student body president in 1952, who went on to teach electronics at his alma mater for 31 years. “We would have dances every other Friday night. We had good participation, so it brought the students closer together.” When Friday night came around, most of the 650 students would hop to the school cafeteria, Sundance, American Fork or wherever the dance was held, where several school employees would bring their instruments and provide the music. But even though students were regularly cutting a rug, Central Utah Vocational School was by no means just a party school of the 50s. “The students were really serious about getting an education,” White said. “Students all over the Valley were interested in going to the technical college. It was a great school and it’s still a great school.” When J. Marvin Higbee took the reigns as president in 1982, he was met with the task of turning the technical college into a community college. Sederburg another period of history draws to a close for UVSC, the successes of those leaders involved in shaping the institution can be seen as truly laying the foundation for what will become Utah Valley University. Many of the College’s student body presidents, as well as institutional presidents, worked hand in hand to see the College’s potential realized. Sequel Magazine takes a look back at who some of these leaders were and how each of them has shaped what UVU will become. Wilson W.
