Though I always knew the day would come, I still found myself worrying about her taking this giant step into adulthood as the day drew near. Had I taught her what she needed to know to be independent? Would she be able to deal with the challenges of marriage? Did she know how to sort her laundry? Could she cook anything beside grilled cheese sandwiches? “I’ll be fine, mom,” was her stock response to every question. This was true enough, but considering this same darling girl at age 20 begged me to accompany her to the library to get her own card, I felt I had reason to worry. In the end, she got the card on her own, and she seems to be handling marriage just fine. I needed to have a little faith in her and let her grow up on her own. I miss the little girl that she was, but I also delight in the woman she is becoming. Now Sequel, like my daughter, is taking its last big step into the grown-up world of university magazines. Like my daughter, it will change its name to reflect its new status in the world. And, once again, I’m worrying about a transition and how it will be accepted. Will anyone like the new magazine? Will anyone read it? Will it continue to engage alumni? Will anyone recognize what it is? In the end, I’ll probably miss the old Sequel but I know I will take great delight in the new UVU Magazine. I hope you do, too.
