Sequel - Spring 2008 - (Page 6) camp us news PHOTO BY STEVEN STONE The reason that he’s asked to participate in all of these roles, Rocca said, is simple. “I’m an expert at sounding like an expert.” His speech, which was on that very topic, included an amusingly basic PowerPoint presentation and a great deal of audience participation. Rocca brought audience members on stage for tongue-in-cheek quizzes about how to respond to a photograph of a celebrity and about how to speak in the style of various news stations. He also gave the audience some basic pointers on how to sound wellinformed about historical figures, such as skipping to the end of biographies. (It’s a practice that, according to Rocca, has turned him into an expert on the deaths of everyone important.) Rocca ended the presentation part of his speech by turning the floor over to the audience, inviting them to ask questions. Questions ranged in topic from the 2008 elections and Rocca’s personal opinion on presidential candidate Mitt Romney to a question on which would win in a fight, a polar bear or a buffalo. It was an evening of high energy, insightful opinion and the trademark wry, tongue-in-cheek humor that Rocca admirers have come to love. And which would win a fight between a polar bear or a buffalo? According to Rocca, who is clearly the expert on everything worth being an expert about, it would be the polar bear. BOARD OF REGENTS APPROVES MASTER'S DEGREE IN EDUCATION POLITICALLY SPEAKING: MO ROCCA RECENTLY SHARED POLITICAL AND CELEBRITY COMMENTARY WITH AUDIENCE MEMBERS AT UVSC. MO ROCCA ROCKS THE MCKAY It sounded more like a rock star was about to take the stage of the UVSC McKay Center in February – with shouts and cheers, and a few all-out screams. But instead, it was news reporter and political commentator Mo Rocca. Rocca is known for his appearances on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” VH1 specials such as “I Love the 80s,” or even as a judge on Food Network’s “Iron Chef America.” He also covered the 2004 elections for Larry King and the 2008 elections for NBC’s “Tonight Show.” Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes President The Utah State Board of Regents recently approved a new master’s degree in education, the first to be offered at Utah Valley University beginning fall 2008. Briant Farnsworth, dean for the School of Education, said the graduate program has been in the works for a few years and the School is prepared to bring the program to the next level. “This is really just a starting point for UVSC,” said Elizabeth Hitch, vice president for academic affairs. “Our preparation for this degree will carry over in preparation of more master's degrees in the future for UVU and the communities it serves.” The master’s degree program already has a waiting list of more than 100 applicants for the 30 available spots.
