SPEAKS TO LAST UVSC GRADS The last graduates of UVSC were addressed by Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. at commencement ceremonies April 25. “It’s very appropriate to have the Governor speak to the last group of students to graduate from Utah Valley State College,” said Val Hale, vice president of advancement at UVSC. “He has been one of the great supporters of university status, and we were honored to have him on campus for this historic moment.” Governor Huntsman, along with Bill Hulterstrom, president and CEO of United Way of Utah County and Lane Beattie, president of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, received honorary degrees from the College. Students graduating after July 1, 2008, will receive Utah Valley University diplomas. However, all graduates of Central Utah Vocational School, Utah Trade Technical Institute, Utah Technical College at Provo, Utah Valley Community College and UVSC are also eligible for a UVU diploma. NY TIMES REPORTER, ETHAN BRONNER, SPEAKS ON “WAR AND TERROR” New York Times Reporter Ethan Bronner recently visted UVSC to speak on “War and Terror: How the NY Times Covers Today’s Big Global Conflicts.” Bronner is currently the Foreign Desk Editor for the New York Times and will be going to Jerusalem to be a correspondent for the Times. Discussing everything from what goes on at the foreign desk to what happens when reporting on site, Bronner wanted the audience to educate themselves about the current issues and then put themselves into the shoes of others. Because of the continual decline of newspaper readership and with many news organizations struggling to survive, Bronner says the Times aims to bring readers a sense of what is going on in every place of the world. “I don’t express my views as a journalist and I don’t know the answer to whether or not I support the war,” said Bronner. “Instead of arguing, I ask questions.” Following Bronner’s remarks, he opened up the floor for questions from the audience.
