PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB SCOTT Jeffrey Kahn Alumni Legacy Award Jeff Kahn has a tremendous love for UVSC. “When I first walked on campus in 1985, there was something exciting about being there. And I still feel that excitement every time I set foot on campus today,” he said. Kahn has served as chairman of the Foundation Board and is mentoring four students as part of the Center for the Advancement of Leadership. He is also a former Alumni Association President As Vice President and Sales Manager of Southwest Trust Company, he knows the importance of making a difference in the world around him, and setting high standards for himself. “I am thoroughly convinced that if we don’t set goals in our life and learn how to master the technique of living to reach our goals,” he said, “we will reach old age and look back on our life only to see that we reached but a small part of our full potential.” Tom heal Alumni Pinnacle Award “Never a dull moment” is what Tom Heal jokingly says his wife will put on his tombstone. Always striving to live life to the fullest, Heal has accomplished much already. He is a Green Beret and was published in the magazine “Off the Wall” in which he documented his adventures searching the globe for the “ultimate” water dive. But his search for adventure isn’t limited to water – he is also a hot air balloon pilot. Heal is receiving the Alumni Pinnacle Award for giving much of his time and talent to the Alumni Association since 1996, including serving as president of the Association. Heal is currently an entrepreneur and successful broker for Tom Heal Sperry Van Ness Commercial Real Estate in Provo. marilyn mansfield Wilson W. Sorensen Lifetime Achievement Award Marilyn Mansfield has been on the front lines of virtually every developmental phase UVSC has ever had, yet still gains the most satisfaction out of sitting down with students and helping them reach their goals as an academic and career advisor. She has given decades of service to UVSC and its students through helping implement new programs, heading committees and taking struggling students under her wing. Her success has not been achieved without opposition. Her father thought women shouldn’t attend school. But she proved him wrong when she earned a master’s degree in education from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, a moment she considers, “one of the most fulfilling days of my life.” Her strategies for success have been simple; be consistent and try your best. 14 FA L L 2 0 0 7 utah valley state college alumni magazine
