It was an evening complete with a gourmet seven-course meal prepared by UVSC culinary arts students with entertainment provided by the UVSC Ballroom Dance Company, Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Combo, and dancing accompanied by the Dick Losee Band. In addition to the usual festivities came one of the biggest announcements in UVSC history: the Woodbury Corporation, representing four generations of the Orin and Nina Woodbury family, donated $20 million to the institution, naming the business school the Woodbury School of Business. Many of the Woodburys were in attendance that evening and a special video tribute was presented. For more on the Woodbury’s donation and other recent gifts to the College, see page 10. said Joe Shirley Jr., president of the Navajo Nation. “If we can’t afford to send our children to the best schools, then we must bring the best education to our children. This program brings hope to our people and helps our children learn to stand on their own two feet without having to leave our sacred lands.” UVSC RECEIVES GOVERNMENT GRANTS FOR NAVAJO NATION UVSC recently received two grants from the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program – totaling nearly $1 million – to go toward providing video conferencing technology for Navajo Nation schools. “These grants will provide much needed educational options to Navajo students and allow us to expand our growing Native American student enrollment programs,” said UVSC President William A. Sederburg. Many Navajo Nation schools struggle to provide computer literacy skills to students and young adults due to low faculty populations, a lack of funding and other educational barriers. The grants will provide Navajo Nation students with video conferencing technology that will assist with computer literacy certification training, centralized health, concurrent enrollment, college preparatory courses and other governmental professional development offerings. These resources will be available to 81 chapter houses, schools and other prioritized training location centers in 70 percent of the Navajo Nation communities, which cover more than 27,000 square NAVAJO NATION: UVSC PRESIDENT WILLIAM A. Nelson, the 2007 Utah State Amateur Champion, is the first Wolverine to win an individual title since Nic Van Vuuren, who won the Independent Championship in 2006. “Hopefully Nick’s win will set the bar high for the rest of the team,” said Head Coach Clark Rustand. “It’s a huge start for him and his career, and it will only get better for him and for the team.” 4 WINTER 2008 utah valley state college alumni magazine PHOTO BY STEVEN STONE
