Sequel - Winter 2008 - (Page 8) at our best DANCE FACULTY AND STUDENTS PERFORM IN NEW YORK CITY Doris Trujillo, assistant professor of dance and director of UVSC’s Contemporary Dance Ensemble, recently returned from New York where she presented her choreographic work, “Resilire,” at the American Dance Guild’s 51st Performance Festival in the Hudson Guild Theater. In order to involve her students in this unique opportunity, she invited seven student dancers from UVSC’s Contemporary Dance Ensemble to perform the routine in this SHARING THE LIMELIGHT: UVSC DANCE STUDENTS JOIN FACULTY MEMBER DORIS TRUJILLO professional venue. FOR A NEW YORK PERFORMANCE “This opportunity fulfilled the objective of our president’s community of engaged learning initiative,” Trujillo said. “The students were able to experience workshops from master teachers, view current works of internationally acclaimed choreographers and perform in a professional setting. It was a very significant learning experience.” More than 34 dance companies from across the United States, Europe and Canada participated at the Festival. PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM RANKED NATIONALLY The Presidential Leadership Program, part of UVSC’s Center for the Advancement of Leadership (CAL), is entering its second year. Recently ranked as one of the top leadership programs in the nation by Leadership Excellence Magazine, CAL is at the forefront of educational leadership, grouped among universities like UCLA, Northwestern, Harvard, Duke and others. PHOTO BY JACOB SCOTT “The goal of this program is to provide what I call an experiential framework for the entire development of a student’s experience,” said Bruce Jackson, director of the UVSC Center for the Advancement of Leadership. “In the real world, most factors that contribute to effectiveness are leadership skills – skills related to personal, interpersonal, organizational and societal influence.” As participants in the program, students experience mentoring, lectures, workshops and service projects. EARTH SCIENCE INSTRUCTOR PRESENTS AT NATIONAL GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA UVSC’s Bill Dinklage, assistant professor of earth science, recently presented his research to 6,300 geoscientists as part of the 119th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. Dinklage’s research took him and two UVSC students to Nevada where they investigated the thermal structure of a mountain belt by measuring metamorphic temperatures with the titanium-in-biotite UNDER THE SCOPE: BILL geothermometer.
