CHI - Spring 2009 - (Page 63) FASHION WITH A HEART Farouk Systems’ South American distributor Sistemas de Belleza recently participated in “Fashion With a Heart,” a fundraiser devoted to raising money and aware– ness for kids with heart conditions. According to Sistemas’ Mauricio Varon, a number of Columbian supermodels walked the catwalk, along with a top Japanese model, and more than 800 attended the fashion show. Hair stylists used Farouk Systems products to transform and style the models’ tresses. Backstage at Fashion With a Heart team CHI poses for a portrait Models received CHI products in goody bags! When she portrays the conniving Wilhelmina on Ugly Betty, Vanessa Williams’ hair stylist relies on CHI products to keep her strands under control. Bobby Bank/WireImage.com donAtIonS For A CAUSE As the hair stylist responsible for keeping Vanessa Williams’ “Wilhelmina” character looking fierce on the hit show Ugly Betty, Qodi Armstrong relies on CHI products and tools to get the job done. Wilhelmina is always in control, laughs the pro, who has also worked on a number of blockbuster films, including The Devil Wears Prada, American Gangster and I Am Legend, and that includes keeping her locks under control, too. So CHI blow dryers and styling irons are always on the set, along with Armstrong’s favorite styler, CHI Pliable Polish. And because Williams likes her hair “rock-star straight,” according to Armstrong, “we use lots of CHI 44 Iron Guard as thermal protection.” The stylist also handles hair duties for some of the show’s supporting players, including Michael Urie (Marc) and Ashley Jensen (Christina). He reveals that CHI Molding Paste is his go-to product for Urie’s curly hair and CHI Silk Infusion keeps Jensen’s strands shiny without excess weight. “We work long days under very hot lights,” notes Armstrong, “and thanks to CHI, the cast’s hair always looks healthy and shiny.” BETTY LOVES CHI Farouk Systems recently joined forces with Houston disc jockey Crisco Kidd (Josh Carmona) at a special hair cutting party for volunteer hair donors. The event was the culmination of Kidd’s annual campaign to encourage listeners to grow their hair to at least eight inches in order to donate it to be made into free wigs for cancer victims. Boudreaux was on hand to flat- iron the donors’ hair to ensure the requisite eight inches of length, and to style the “clients” after snipping. Kidd, himself a cancer survivor, established his annual “hair drives” in order to support innovative research, education and outreach directed at the development of more effective approaches to the early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of all women’s cancers. Farouk Educator Michelle Boudreaux, dJ Crisco Kidd and Houston City Council Member Peter H. Brown prepare to cut a donor’s hair. Boudreaux and Kidd make sure eight inches of hair are available.
