CHI Spring 2008 - (Page 28) HAIRDRESSER Q & A ask the hairdressers Help! You need somebody. Not just anybody. That’s why Farouk Systems Group hair pros are on the job. I have curly hair and I love it—but sometimes it looks frizzy or unruly. How can I make the most of my natural texture? Ciara G., Miami, FL Q A Curly girls need five hair care products to keep coils looking great. First, use a gentle shampoo, and try to avoid washing your hair every day. CHI® Curl Preserve System Shampoo is a great choice because its low pH formula will not strip hair of vital moisture. Every day, whether you shampoo or not, apply a rich conditioning treatment, like CHI® Curl Preserve System Treatment, to towel-dried hair to seal in moisture. Finish with a light leave-in formula, like CHI® Curl Preserve System Leave-In Conditioner. “Set” your strands with a lightweight gel like CHI® Infra Gel and finish with a pomade like CHI® Pliable Polish to define and open up curls. silk, so it provides hair with strength, shine and light hold without weighing it down. Color is also critical. Shiny, glossy, rich-colored hair is youthful hair. If your natural color has become dull or gray, consider erasing the years with salon color. Professional formulas that are ammonia-free, like CHI® Ionic Permanent Shine Color with CHI® 44 ceramic and ionic technology will transform your hue and cover your grays completely. One tip: Ask your stylist for a shade that is one or two shades lighter than your natural color. It will brighten up your skin and even camouflage wrinkles! Q I decided to touch-up my gray roots at home, so I bought a box of hair color at the store. It was described as “reddish brown” and now my roots are bright orange and the rest is dark brown! How can I possibly fix this? Anne T., Mansfield, OH Q My kids tell me that my hair makes me look older than I really am but I’m not sure how to change it. Any advice? Paulette N., San Diego, CA We think it’s a myth that women of a certain age have to cut their hair short—although short hair is great if you have the right bone structure and figure. It must be proportionate and be sure to get a cut that artfully frames your features and doesn’t leave your face completely exposed. It’s also important to avoid any styles that are rigid and stiff-looking. The best way to look youthful is to keep your hair as simple as possible. Ask your stylist for a cut that moves and is designed for your facial shape. Use lightweight, pliable styling products. CHI® Pliable Polish is perfect for most hair types—it’s formulated with A If you try to correct this situation at home, you risk damaging your hair and ending up with a shade that’s even worse, so we urge you to make an appointment with the best salon color specialist in your area. Professionals are trained to understand the principles of color theory, and they know how to avoid problems like the one you describe. Then be patient, because it will probably take several appointments to safely achieve the even, warm brown color that you have in mind. Your stylist will probably start by applying a demipermanent color gloss in a medium blonde to your roots to soften the look of the orange without making it too dark. On your next visit (in four-to-six weeks), she will likely want to apply a more neutral formula that will continue to tone down those bright roots. Eventually you will have the results you desire, and hopefully in the future, you will leave your roots (and the rest of your color) in your stylist’s capable hands! n A 28 Volume IV, Issue 14
