CHI Spring 2008 - (Page 36) TALKING ABOUT STYLE turn winter woes into winter wows What to do about hat hair and more SNOWFLAKES LOOK BEAUTIFUL if you’re watching them from under your snuggly throw by the fireplace. But if you’re on your way to work, an important meeting or a party, the little crystals—along with wind and frigid temps—become hair style enemies. It’s true that the months ahead can be particularly hard on all types of strands, but help is near. Two Farouk Systems Group experts—Lisa Marie and Tahirih Guillory—reveal the best ways to overcome winter’s most common hair woes. WOE: Itchy, flaky scalp WOW: Going from your warm shower to your dry house to the cold outdoors causes your scalp to contract, says Guillory, who co-owns the Rendezvous Salon in Woodbury, New Jersey. That’s why hair tends to grow more slowly in the winter than it does in the summer, and also why you may experience sensations of tightness and itchiness during cold months. The solution lies in formulas which actually stimulate scalp circulation. Her favorite formula for “unclenching” a tight, uncomfortable scalp is the three-part CHI® 44 Power Plus System. The shampoo, conditioner and topical nutrient treatment all contain stinging nettle, a natural botanical which stimulates circulation. Additional botanicals and moisturizers hydrate and soothe. “Use the system once a week,” advises Guillory. “It’s a great way to ‘winterize’ hair and scalp.” WOE: Snap, crackle and pop WOW: If winter hair had a theme song, it might be “How Dry I Am.” Outside, humidity is nearly nonexistent and indoors, central heat rivals the Sahara for low moisture content. As a result, your hair appears limp and often snaps and crackles with static frizz. Don’t hold back when it comes to moisturizing, asserts Lisa Marie, whose Color Salon is located in Austin. Start with a gentle shampoo like CHI ® Nourish Intense Silk Bath Shampoo—it contains a high percentage of rosewater which soothes and coddles. Lather up the cleanser in your palms first, she advises, then work it into your hair and massage your scalp with your fingertips rather than your fingernails to avoid irritation. Shampoo and rinse with tepid rather than scalding H20. Then reach for a supermoisturizing conditioner, like CHI® Nourish Intense Hair Masque (it comes in formulas for both fine and coarse hair types) or the new BioSilk® Recovery Treatment with emollients and silk protein. “Don’t forget to moisturize your scalp,” Lisa Marie recommends, “and take this opportunity to do another light massage to stimulate circulation.” continued 36 Volume IV, Issue 14
