CHI Spring 2008 - (Page 6) LETTER FROM YOUR HAIRDRESSER AS STYLISTS, OUR WISH IS to satisfy you in every way, and that includes sending you out the door with hair that makes you happy every time you sit in our chair. The key to that satisfaction is clarity, and the best path to clarity is communication. With this in mind, and as a result of our experience, we believe that you can get the very best out of your salon experience by following five important guidelines: 1. Arrive on time. Arriving just 10 minutes late for a 30-minute appointment takes one-third off our time, forcing us to choose between rushing your service or keeping the next client waiting. That alone can stress us out, possibly shortchanging the discussion of what you want that day in order for us to have enough time left to do a top-quality cut. 2. Tell the full story. It’s easy for that home hair color kit you used four weeks earlier to slip your mind, but if you don’t tell us what’s on your hair, we cannot mix the proper color formula to achieve the shade you want. Do you take medication? That can affect the porosity of your hair and how well it accepts a chemical service. Do you really spend 20 minutes styling your hair every day, or does that include washing it? Your hairdresser doesn’t judge you! Tell us the truth. 3. Bring photos. Your version of “shoulder-length” hair can be inches off your hairdresser’s estimation, and just imagine how many different mental images there are of “a pretty shade of blonde” or “rich brown.” The best way to describe the cut, color and style you want is to bring one or more photos. Pictures can also display what you don’t want. We hair stylists tend to be very visually oriented, so most of us appreciate it when you add “show” to “tell.” 4. Face reality. One of the most common reasons for disappointing results with your hairdresser is the reluctance to accept limitations. Let’s say you’ve been bleaching your hair for a year; you want to go a little darker and you expect your hair to look radiant an hour after you walk into the salon. But if your hair is damaged from the bleach, it will take several appointments to bring it to a healthy state so that you can color it again. Or perhaps you want your hair to match a beautiful celebrity’s, but if your face shape is completely different then it will not be flattered by his/her style. You must also be realistic about your budget. Today’s technology does make it possible to sleek out thick, curly hair or to plump up baby-fine hair, but you may have to spend more time and money than you anticipated—not only at the salon, but for your home maintenance as well. Trust your stylist to help you select the best look according to who you are and the hair you have. 5. Be assertive. While we cannot perform miracles, we can help you achieve a look that will make you happy. Listen carefully as we explain what we intend to do. If we’ve misunderstood your wishes, please let us know. You’re the one who has to live with your hair; do everything possible to make it the hair you want to wear.
