First Chair - Spring 2008 Success Guide - (Page 16) First Chair School of the Year Awards 2008 >What sets them apart Job placement. Fila Academy helps their students find jobs through a number of means, including an admissions leader who also helps with placement, partnerships with local salons and spas, a career fair, a constantly updated job board, and resume and interview classes. They also give graduates continuing assistance in job placement. Business skills. The school teaches students how to market themselves, achieve client retention and track their progress, through a monthly spreadsheet from Professional Salon Concepts. It requires students to track on a daily basis their number of guests; their total dollars in both service and retail; the number of guests that are established, new, referred and rescheduled; the dollars per guest in service and take home; the amount of hours they worked; and the amount of hours they were actually making money. They use a salonpriced menu to help them track where they would actually be making in a salon or spa, and they fill out the spreadsheet with those numbers so they can visualize where they are, where they want to be and how to get there. Involvement in their community. The school has helped raise money for a variety of different charities and causes, with the students themselves often picking the charity and organizing the fundraiser. They’ve raised money for one of their career coaches at the school, a local teenager burned in an accident, Leeza’s Place, Church on the Rocks and Habitat for Humanity, among others. Extracurriculars. The school has a Design Team, Product Rep Team and Student Council. The Design Team helps educate the community on the industry and the school, and also participates in local fashion shows and workshops. The Product Rep Team helps stock, price, control and educate other students about the products the school carries. They also help prepare future professionals interested in becoming a rep for a product line after graduation. The Student Council helps facilitate events and organizes participation in charitable causes, giving them leadership experience. 1ST RUNNER-UP Location: Glen Burnie, Maryland Owner: Larry V. From the beginning, not only did the technical skills that were stressed in school help me become one of the top stylists in every salon that I worked at, but the interpersonal skills as well as the business side of the salon industry all have enabled me to be a successful salon owner.” —Erik Kauffman, owner, Shane & Kauffman, Arnold, Maryland >According to a graduate “The structure of the classes, the rules and regulations, were a part of the learning experience. For example: being on time to class, having all my supplies and the dress codes helped me in looking the part of a real hair stylist. The academy made sure that beyond the normal classes, industry experts came to speak to us and demonstrate techniques. We also gave cuts to people in homeless shelters and held fundraisers. The Fila Academy has changed my life in many different ways, not just learning the trade, but me as a person.” —Stacey M. Smith What the judges say “Extraordinary real world training; their graduates would have a true advantage in their first jobs.”—M.A. “Extensive skin care curriculum is impressive.”—L.S. 16 MODERN SALON’S FIRSTCHAIR SPRING 2008 Learn more @ firstchair.com http://www.filaacademy.com http://firstchair.com
