I have had so many. First interests started with my grandfather, Dr. Einik. Then years with Dr. Wagner in Applied Cosmetics; Dr. Spiro, Cosmetic surgery; Dr. Wolf, Professional Products; and the best aesthetics teacher, Mrs. Joan Thornecroft. Back row, L to R - Bo Langley, Mark Driessens, David Wahl; front row, L to R - Ken Reiner, Dottie Reiner, Jim Wahl, Scott Nessa. >Jim Wahl Executive Vice President, Professional Beauty/Barber Division Who was your first mentor in the industry and what did you learn from him or her? My grandfather, Leo J. Wahl, developed an electro-magnetic motor while he was still a teenager at Sterling High School, in 1911. He patented this motor and began manufacturing electro-magnetic hair clippers in 1919. By the end of 1920, he manufactured and sold over 1,000 of his clippers to barbers across the United States. He used his strengths, capitalized on his knowledge and built his future. I think it’s the same advice that I would give today’s future stylists. What else would you tell new graduates about the hair industry? Students need to look to their own strengths, and cultivate them. Additionally, it’s essential that you keep learning, throughout your career. Education is the key to success. We, at Wahl, feel it’s an essential part of our marketing to present education to stylists at trade shows and on our website, to show stylists how to best use our products, so they can be more successful. What has been your favorite class and why? There were many, but the best life knowledge (that could be applied in every thing you do) was a lecture series and seminars featuring some of the greats—R. Buckminster Fuller, a very young Ralph Nader and professors from around the globe. Every formula, product or service must have the responsibility of quality and effectiveness, not only for the immediate time period, but must always take on future responsibilities, which are incurred in the long term. This has always been a factor in everything my company and I produce. Form will always follow function, clinical research is extremely important, and long-term effectiveness and safety is always taken into account. Each and every individual on this earth has to take the responsibility to have a conscience in their business life as well as their personal life. We have been in this industry for over 32 years and we strive to learn and do everyday. What is one thing that you would tell new graduates about the beauty industry? Educate your clients to why and how. They will always be your best consumer. Feel the courage of your conviction; it will instill them to keep coming to a “professional” to buy from a “professional” and to doubt the fads. Instill in them taking the responsibility of quality, and respecting the time and the knowledge that you put into everything you do.
