Vance Chairman of the Board Peggy Walker President Harry Urban Sr. Vice President, Interiors/Events As you move out into the beauty industry, you should know that your timing couldn’t be better! Just last December, U.S. News and World Report issued its yearly look at the Best Careers in the country for 2008. One of the 11 careers that were newly added to the list this year was hairstylist/cosmetologist. It’s no wonder it ranks as one of the best careers—cosmetologists generally have a high job satisfaction, the pay is good to great, and the outlook in the job market is fantastic! In fact, a 2007 study from NACCAS (the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences) found that there were more jobs available in the industry than there were people able to fill them. Judging by the entrants in our first FirstChair School of the Year competition, the number of great applicants coming out of schools is surely on the rise! It was very hard to narrow the schools down to just three. Our judges were impressed with the innovative programs that went beyond basic cuts and colors, the opportunities for students to connect with others in the industry as well as their own communities, and the overall professionalism that’s being instilled. You can find the winning school and the two runners up starting on page 14. If you want to see more pictures from our photo shoot at the winning school, Poway Academy, go to firstchair.com. You can also find interviews with members of the Master Artistic Team about the three styles they created for our photos. Once you’ve left school behind though, learning is definitely not finished. If you want to be truly successful in your career, you’ll never stop taking classes or picking up new tips and techniques. That’s why this issue is themed “Tools for Success.” In this feature story on page 18, we tried to cover everything that you might use to build your career—from picking the right salon, participating in a salon training program and finding mentors, to attending in-salon education, going to trade shows and manufacturer education. Plus, we look at the actual equipment you use every day—brushes, shears, clippers, blow dryers, thermal tools and cleaning products—and tell you what to look for when you go to buy. We hope this issue helps you on your way to building your great career. Even after graduation, don’t forget about FirstChair, though! You can visit firstchair.com to find great articles and tools to help you succeed even once you’ve entered the salon. We’ll help you make the transition a smooth one! >If you ever have any questions, comments or story ideas, please drop me an e-mail.
