Home Fashion Forecast - Fall 2007 - (Page 20) decorating techniques: easily done Decorating gets a shot in the arm from Waverly’s coordinated collections, which are well thought out, broadly based and affordable. When decorating one’s home, the stakes are high and the process can be hugely expensive. Then, there’s the perennial problem of finding all the components—furniture, fabrics, rugs, lighting and accessories—that not only look good on their own, but work well together. Herein lies the value of licensed collections, according to Pamela Maffei-Toolan, Vice President of Design for Waverly. The best ones offer the real possibility of achieving design integrity through style, pattern and color harmony. This is particularly true of collections that incorporate textiles, an area of design that seems to pose the most difficulty for do-it-yourself decorators. “There’s a fine line between inspiration and frustration,” Maffei-Toolan said. “It’s important for home decorators to both fall in love with a look, and feel empowered to recreate it.” Collections, therefore, are suited to bridging the gap between inspiration and ability, she said. With Waverly’s archive of 25,000 designs and 2,000 current fabrics, plus coordinated home fashions from 12 different licensees, it’s hard for a home decorating project to fail. “First and foremost, we create every pattern with both design integrity and color continuity in mind,” she observed. “A harmonious look can be achieved by considering four coordinating patterns or 40. The line is that expansive— and that carefully designed.” “Prepackaged” looks are a potential pitfall with any collection. Still, “they can be the gateway to achieving highly personal, individually beautiful looks,” Maffei-Toolan said. “And what greater design satisfaction is there?” Waverly designs can be found in many price points and categories, including top-of-bed, shower curtains, wallpaper, lighting, paint and stationary.
