The American consumer’s tastes in home furnishings and interiors have undergone nothing short of a sea of change during the last decade. This fact is clearly reflected in the evolution of the Colonial Williamsburg product line. Launched in 1936, and an example upon which subsequent licensed collections were modeled, the Williamsburg brand has loosened up, design-wise, over the decades in order to remain relevant to today’s consumer. “There has been a significant evolution of the brand from pure reproductions to include 75 percent interpretative product,” observed Liza Gusler, Williamsburg Product Manager. “It’s an opportunity to tap into our great design, but also appeal to a much broader spectrum.” In many respects, the Williamsburg program is illustrative of the changes in the collection-based home furnishings marketing at large. Licensors are responding to the evolving tastes of today’s consumers by moving away from strict reproductions. Today, color is likely to provide the link among items in a collection. “We might coordinate products from different manufacturers to certain colors, such as one of our Pratt & Lambert paints,” Gusler said. Designers also are modifying certain design elements so that furnishings resonate with today’s consumer in a way they might not otherwise. Sometimes, just changing the scale adds the “humor and the tweak on tradition that keeps things interesting,” Gusler concluded. The marketing arm of Colonial Williamsburg has responded to consumers’ demand for furnishings that are more casual and eclectic.
