Home Fashion Forecast - Fall 2008 - (Page 6) seems like old times If everything old is new again, then Roberta Schilling earns special accolades for her new wall decor. Schilling’s playful Lata florals and butterflies are made from recycled, hand-cut tin cans—both the product and the process are eco-friendly. Plus, the Lata Series is artisanal. (Quick refresher: Last season, Home Fashion Forecast foreshadowed a trend toward handcrafted and folk art-inspired products.) In this issue, we illustrate similar directions, namely repurposed silhouettes and timely textures. Both resonate with consumers who are searching for the familiar—solid and proven options during uncertain times. They are classics reborn … tucked away, but never truly forgotten. The American Arts & Crafts period is rich fodder for rediscovery, page 22; meanwhile, designers’ new takes on the perennial wingback chair are at once familiar and new, page 24. Lastly, Home Fashion Forecast submits organic textures as new classics, page 26. Consider the nubby texture of tree bark, the mottled appearance of stone, or the play of color in a harsh desert landscape…mother nature’s plentiful textures are the oldest, most familiar inspiration of them all, admired and desired for their power to soothe. (And who couldn’t use some soothing during these times?) When facing an uncertain economic future, even fashion-forward consumers look to an idealized past for comfort. Beyond the blush of recognition from a repurposed tin can, or a finish that mimics driftwood, is a familiar form or a new application. Such details make classic inspirations and weathered materials so unexpected and refreshingly current. Julie M.
