Turner explained. “I like a rich feel, a soul, in a room. Many of the rooms today look cool, just like hotel rooms. And I’d like to stay in them— for three days. That’s about the extent of it. “My style is mixed,” he continued. “Things are movable, interchangeable … it’s realistic. One is not going to do their entire house in one style.” A California native, Turner attributes his charming “mixed-up” aesthetic to childhood vacations in England, where he spent summers with his British grandmother. “Such experiences develop one’s sensibility,” he noted. “One of my strongest and earliest memories of interior design is my grandmother’s bedroom and lilac hydrangea chintz. It was very cool— classic British Country.” A look at Turner’s new namesake upholstery collection for Elite Leather reveals those European roots. However, the overt traditional quality is tempered by a casualness that keeps his products and interiors from looking stodgy. Ultimately, Turner said he believes that great design, like his other great love, entertaining, hinges on comfort, function and practicality—qualities that Europeans and Californians seem to understand better than most people.
