Hospitality Lighting - Summer 2008 - (Page 4) host station Vacation Envy During a recent trip to London, I spent every waking minute in sightseeing mega-mode. It was my first visit, and from Westminster Abbey to Portobello Road, I had to fit it all in. True, I enjoyed an entire week out from behind my work desk, but does it really count as “vacation” if at night you return to your room too exhausted to even untie your shoes, and if in the morning your alarm is set for 6 a.m. just so you can beat the line at Tate Modern? Don’t get me wrong: My sojourn across the pond was an amazing adventure, and I delighted in each and every day that I spent traipsing through that captivating city. But now, as I watch the work continue to pile up post-holiday, I’m beginning to get that familiar itch: (sigh) “I need a vacation.” To realize the full benefits of my most-valued time off, I prefer to go somewhere with a great view and to do, well— absolutely nothing. The venues featured in this issue turn that alluringly fainéant agenda into an art form. In the Bahamas, The Cove Atlantis resort offers the ultimate luxurious getaway (“Sun Worship,” page 8), thanks, in part, to Gothic-goes-to-the-beach-themed ambience, intensified by cathedral-worthy custom pendants and color-changing LEDs. Farther west, The Peaks in Telluride, CO, tenders a much different experience, though no less decadent (“Peak Experience,” page 12). Here, subtle lighting heightens the sense of peace and tranquility encouraged by the first-class retreat’s snow-covered surroundings. I’m excited for—and acutely envious of—the lucky folks who will visit these amazing, exotic properties in quest of rest and relaxation. In the meantime, I’ll have to settle for living out my vacation fantasies through the pages of this magazine. There are definitely worse ways to spend a day at the office.
