Modern Salon - January 2008 - (Page 36) NEW•NOW•NEXT Dear Professional, The PBA (Professional Beauty Association) is now celebrating its 5th year in operation. However don’t let our young age fool you. The PBA is the result of a merger between BBSI, ABA, and TSA. The intent of merging was to bring unification to our industry. BBSI (Beauty and Barber Supply Institute) was formed over 100 years ago representing the Beauty Distributors. ABA (American Beauty Association) represented the manufacturers and TSA is The Salon Association. Bringing these groups together inspired continued development of the industry with common goals and initiatives. Equally important is that it provides a voice for you. HAIR TODAY, NAILS TOMORROW In West Coast Editor Alicia Marantz’s last installment of her pre-wedding diary, she finalizes her hair stylist and debates nail color. And the winner is Michael Shaun Corby! What a treat to have three star hairdressers’ work on potential looks for my wedding day. Each was über-talented and had his or her own unique way of creating my look. Michael Shaun had an inspiration board with ideas pulled from various magazines so we could talk about his vision; Janine Jarman gifted me with her Haute Hollywood Locks (amazing clip-in extensions that look so real!) and created two different looks—one for the ceremony and one for the reception. Pamela Perettie asked me to bring in ideas, then she looked at my profile to determine the best height for the updo and bought fresh flowers to incorporate into the style. She also sent me products to use so my hair would be primed for the final look—something she does for every bride. I was taken aback by the devotion, creativity and dedication of each stylist, and know this is how they treat Alicia’s wedding day style pick. each woman on and before her wedding day. With hair and make-up decided, and my skin care regimen on track, it’s now all about nails. Most brides wear light colors or a French manicure, but I’m still in flux. My choices are light and natural or a deep rich merlot or burgundy to complement my bouquet and wedding colors. And, it’s winter, so dark nails might be fun and different. I tracked down OPI’s Suzi Weiss Fischmann at Cosmoprof in July and asked for her thoughts on wedding-day dark nails. “I love it!” Suzi said. “It is such a dramatic and different alternative to sheer nails for today’s bride. The look is sophisticated and chic, especially if your bouquet contains flowers in rich, darker hues.” I am experimenting with dark and light shades for the big day. In the meantime, if you have an opinion, log onto www.modernsalon.com and post a comment on my blog. Space Program DO IT BETTER Whether you’re checking out a new location or expanding a current salon operation, why get stuck with space you don’t really need? Frederic Holzberger, founder of Aveda Fredric’s Institutes and NAHA Salon Design of the Year finalist 2007, offers helpful suggestions for finding that perfect fit. The first move is a commitment to put every square inch of salon real estate to good use. “Ask a commercial broker for a free demographic analysis,” says Holzberger, who advises owners to choose a setting where they can anticipate the most traffic and growth. Then broaden your search parameters for a structure or building. For example, a former restaurant may be a good starting place, he says. The existing water, electrical and air conditioning set-ups are readily adaptable to use by a beauty salon. To correctly gauge room-size requirements, Holzberger recommends using three key factors: profit-generating space (retail, hair color, cutting and spa), non-profit areas (staff room, storage, restroom) and expansion. “Don’t take space and try to fill it,” Holzberger cautions. Avoid over-allocating to non-profit areas—office, coat room or laundry facilities—or to future expansion. Both are common pitfalls that may prove costly mistakes in the long run. To ensure that a potential space will meet both present and future needs, visit modernsalon.com to see the easy-measure method adapted for salon use by Holzberger. —Victoria Wurdinger Lee Rizzuto, Jr. 36 JANUARY 2008 www.modernsalon.com http://www.probeauty.org http://www.modernsalon.com http://www.probeauty.org http://www.modernsalon.com http://www.modernsalon.com
