Modern Salon - January 2009 - (Page 50) CHOOSE BEAUTY Tales from Down Under RAMY GAFNI CEO of Ramy Cosmetics, LLC. Year I Obtained My Beauty License: 1996 in Sydney, Australia Why I Chose Beauty: I’m the first professional make-up artist in my family. My mother was a buyer of precious stones for a jewelry manufacturer and my father was a diamond dealer. In the gem industry you need to have a good eye for color, and color selection has been one of my major strengths as a make-up artist. I used to doodle over the models in fashion magazines, perfecting their eyebrows and make-up and do makeovers on my sister’s Barbie dolls with Magic Markers. Although I knew I had this passion, I still went to law school in New York. Meanwhile, I continued to apply make-up for friends and family for special occasions and always loved doing elaborate make-up costumes for Halloween. I eventually dropped out of law school and moved to Australia. I needed to get away from those trying to convince me to finish law school, and instead make my own decisions regarding my future. While there I decided to put my passion to the test and enrolled in beauty school in Sydney, strictly for make-up. I knew the moment I started that I’d found my career. Throughout the years, I’ve had some very interesting clients, including Cher. I grew up watching her in the media, so meeting her was incredibly exciting. To have her like my work and buy my products is completely surreal. The most satisfying client I have worked with was Britney Spears. She was at a crossroads in her life and I think the brow shaping and make-up completely transformed her at the time. But my most rewarding clients are cancer patients. I love how empowered they become when they learn how to address the physical side effects of treatments. I never tire of the “before and after.” —Maggie Mulhern 50 JANUARY 2009 JOHN SIMPSON North American guest artist for Goldwell, salon partner of Lewis Hair Salon in Pittsburgh and recipient of the North American Hairstyling Award in the Haircolor category in 2008 Year I Obtained My Beauty License: 1992 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Why I Chose Beauty: Growing up, my life was filled with art and fashion. I started to play with my hair color by experimenting with household products like Joy and Windex to come up with new looks. I was on my way to college to study architecture and about a month before I was to leave for school I approached my mother to tell her I had decided to take a different direction and go to beauty school. The first time I walked into the smell of perm solution I knew I had made the right decision. Throughout my career I understood the power of education. I started studying the greats. The color works of Annie Humphries and the Beth Minardi workshops showed me how the cut and color work simultaneously. I learned about the power of color placement. I hold these women in such high regard—they have helped me in my career. As an educator, I am always asked why I use multiple formulas and how I make color choices. I think of hair as fabric. You may have vinyl, wool and cotton in the same head of hair, and understanding your product choice for each area will make a difference. In my career, I’ve learned one needs to make mistakes to grow. One of my mottos is: “If you dream it, conquer it everything is possible.” It’s my way of saying, “don’t become frustrated when challenged with something new.” My advice to any stylist or colorist is to realize there is always room to expand. There is always inspiration in photography, landscaping, architecture and even automobile design. The shapes, lines and color palettes can all be incorporated into our true love of hair. In addition, advanced education is essential. The most successful hair professionals are in that position due to hard work, self discipline and continuing education. —MM GARETH ANDREW PALMER Keune National Artisan Year I Obtained My License: 1992 in Perth, Australia Why I Chose Beauty: Where I grew up in Australia, there was a program called “Work Experience” that was open to 10th grade students. One of the assignments was to find a job in a field of interest and work there for two weeks. I chose hair, having been intrigued with how it all worked behind the scenes. Once I saw everything that went on in the salon, I knew I had found my calling. After my two weeks were up, Edward, the salon owner, offered me a job. That was July of 1988. Good fortune has allowed me to travel with my craft, bringing me to the States after my apprenticeship. For the past 10 years I have called Raleigh, North Carolina, home. Several years ago I joined forces with Keune Haircosmetics. The energy and excitement that first fueled my desire to work with hair is reignited with every class I teach and every show I present. I am constantly reminded that I have the greatest job, with the ability to touch people both personally and professionally. I have always had a strong desire to excel in our industry and as I continue to grow and learn, I see a bright future. I will share it with those who take the journey with me. —MM www.modernsalon.com http://www.modernsalon.com
