Fantasy Hair Broadway’s premiere wig master, David Brian Brown is receiving rave reviews for his work in The Little Mermaid. All the looks are drawn entirely from Brown’s imagination, with the exception of the lead character, Ariel. “Her look resembles the hair in the animated version,” he says. To achieve the same fullness and movement as in the film, Brown, employing a styling-for-stage-strategy, textures the wig with an iron to increase volume.—MM BEHIND THE SCENES For Richard Dalton, who not only coiffed the hair of Princess Diana but also gave Princes William and Harry their first hair cuts, losing his hair changed his life. Currently based at the Charles of Laguna Salon in California, Dalton freelances and serves as spokesman for Samson Hair Restoration. “I started losing my hair at a young age,” says Dalton. “I wanted to do something, but avoid the Ken doll thing.” He looked into his options and decided on a hair transplant, a procedure that entails moving strips of scalp from the nape or below the occipital to areas where hair is needed—at the crown, along the top or at the front hairline. “It’s not plugs,” says Dalton of the restorative treatment that can involve between 2000 to 3000 hair grafts. “It changes how you feel about yourself.” The cost of the procedure (which can run from $8,000 to $10,000 for a full-head) can be prohibitive, he says, “but I feel it’s worth it.” Here, Dalton critiques celebrity hairlines and offers his suggestions on how to improve them.—Maggie Mulhern It appears that actor Vince Vaughn has already had some type of hair transplant, says Dalton. “It’s very cookie-cutter, as if someone drew it in.” What Dalton would do: A new technique called a quadrian hairline. “It’s very shattered, designed around the client’s face and done to look more natural. For Vince, it would look more realistic.” wireimage.com Hairlines Dalton says that NBC Today show host Matt Lauer looks like he is using either a powder or spray to make the hair look fuller.
