Modern Salon - March 2009 - (Page 58) PROCESS Formulas used: 1. Filler: Redken Shades EQ 1-oz O9AA, 1-oz O6NB, ½-oz clear with 2½-oz developer. 2. Base: Redken Color Gels 1-oz 6N, 1-oz 5N with equal parts 10-volume peroxide. 3. Glosser: 1-oz Redken Crystal Clear with equal parts dedicated processing solution. How-To: 1. Apply the filler from roots to ends. Cover the hair in a plastic cap and place client under heat for 10 minutes. Rinse and dry the hair. 2. Apply the new base formula from roots to ends, then process for 30 minutes. Shampoo and towel dry. 3. Apply the glosser all over, cover the hair in a plastic cap and process under heat for 10 minutes. Allow to cool for five-minutes before shampooing. Instead of the usual high/low thinking, balance intense red against a shade with depth. Deep, shiny brunette is one of the best solutions for making fine hair appear healthy. YOUR MAKEOVERS Filling the Need The natural, light brunette, who, thanks to continual lightening, is currently “almost blonde,” often ends up with highly porous hair and a washed-out tone. Here, the model’s hair was Level 8 on the ends, Level 7 on top. For a long-lasting fix, Summer Vindedahl of Art of Hair, in Laguna Niguel, California, fills first, then creates a new base with deep-chocolate, used in a low-volume developer, damageminimizing formula. When the fine-haired client wants to grow her locks, long layers and point-cutting (to eliminate obvious lines) make the most of things. At iDaburn Salon, in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, stylists used rocker runway looks as inspiration for rebellious hair. But it’s a fine line between avant-garde editorial and edgy wearability. To make the adventurous looks suitable, stylists transformed pinks and purples to pastels. Fast, fashionable and affordable color techniques employed include color blocking, baliage and shine bands, created by placing color along the curve of the head or under a veil of hair.
