Modern Salon - July 2008 - (Page 98) MODERN EDUCATION Dear Professional, If you’re looking for industry superheroes, look to the members of the Professional Beauty Association (PBA). Recently, I accepted the “Sicilian of the Year” award from the Federazione Siciliana del New Jersey, and it got me thinking about the extraordinary people in our industry who accomplish amazing deeds, but aren’t always recognized for them. PBA takes pride in the professionals who make up our membership and in their accomplishments. They make the professional beauty industry look its best! Below are a few examples of such individuals. Intercoiffure Hosts Symposium Intercoiffure America/Canada recently hosted its spring Greensburg Salon Gets Help from PBA Member In the spring issue of PBA Progress, PBA’s quarterly newsletter, you can read more about how one of PBA’s distributor members, Bob Peel Jr, president of Peel’s Salon Services, is rebuilding a salon destroyed in the Greensburg tornado, at no cost to the salon owner. Not only are Bob and Peel’s Salon Services helping the owner rebuild her salon, they are doing it to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Standards. When distributors such as Bob support the community in this way, it can only positively reinforce the perception of the beauty industry. PBA is made up of members like Peel and when we all come together, we can change the way the world sees our industry. To read the entire article, “The Green Wake of the Greensburg Tornado,” visit www.probeauty.org/progress. PBA Salon Owner Wins Business of the Year Marilyn Ihloff, owner of Ihloff Salon and Day Spa and longtime PBA member, was recently named “2008 Oklahoma Small Business Person of the Year” by the U.S. Small Business Association. Ihloff was awarded this honor based on her companies’ staying power, growth in number of employees, increase in sales, innovativeness of product and contributions to community-oriented projects. In her spare time, Ihloff also volunteers as a PBA Salon/Spa Leadership Council Member. It is members such as Ihloff who so generously share their time and business acumen with fellow members that make PBA the industry’s premier trade association. symposium in Las Vegas featuring hands-on education, awards presentations and new product previews. Scott Cole, the organization’s fashion director, demonstrated looks based on strong geometrics and weight-removing cuts. The Haircolor Council presented new techniques led by Creative Director Gina Khan and Executive Council members Jo Blackwell-Preston and David Stanko. Intercoiffure Nouveau recognizes new talent and this year presented cut and color honors to Elaine Lim, Gadabout Salons & Spas, in “The Doll Creator” by Israel’s Haim Tucson, first place; Riley Miller, Sivan, a master of long hair looks. Douglas J. in Okemos, Michigan, second place; and Jess Knight, Richard Nicholas Hair Studio in Philadelphia, third place. The winners will form a Nouveau Creative Team and will appear at the Fall Atelier in New York, October 18-20. Other education included: a business seminar with Robert Cromeans; long hair design with Haim Sivan and Hanan Kamir; hair color with David Velasco; motivational speaking with Debra Penzone; and presentations by Sylvester DeBartolo, Harmonie Redman, Lydia Sarfati, Anthony Muti and the ICA artistic team. Intercoiffure members honored Leo and Robert Passage of Master of Ceremonies Geno Stampora with Pivot Point International with the association’s Visionary of the Intercoiffure America/ Year Award for their contributions to hair design education and Canada President Lois Christie. lifelong learning. LEARN FROM THE LEADERS AT CONGRESS Repêchage is hosting its 10th Annual International Congress August 4-5, 2008 at its NAHA 19 Finalists Announced PBA comes together once a year to honor some of the most talented, driven stylists and industry leaders across North America. In past editions of this column, I’ve talked about the 19th Annual North American Hairstyling Awards, but I now have the privilege of announcing that the NAHA 19 finalists have officially been chosen! Winners will be announced during a star-studded awards ceremony on July 13, 2008 at 8:00pm in Las Vegas, held in conjunction with Cosmoprof North America. Visit www.probeauty.org/naha to view the work of these amazing artists and to purchase tickets to the awards ceremony. PBA is excited to share the NAHA honorees’ and finalists’ work with the world and influence those outside this revolutionary industry. Our industry is one of the best places to build a creative, successful, professional and communityservice orientated career. If you’re looking to touch people’s lives and make the world a more beautiful place, there is no better industry to work in and no better trade association to belong to than PBA. It’s important to honor the heroes and role models in this industry, and PBA is proud to share their success with the world. headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey.
