Growing Pains WEDDING COUNTDOWN MODERN’s Alicia Marantz is cataloging her beauty journey as she prepares for her January wedding. This month, it’s all about length. With six and a half months to go, I decided it was time to start focusing on what I wanted to grow: hair and eyelashes. I’ll admit: I am one of those women who fear the shears. (If you saw the pictures from my tween years, you would understand.) My stylist has convinced me, however, that my hair needs to be trimmed, so he has a plan. “We’ll extend as much time between hair cuts as possible, with conditioning treatments and the maintenance of split ends in between.” He also reminded me that more blood flow to the scalp encourages hair growth. I invested in the Denman Shampoo Brush they use on me at the salon and now I use it every time I wet my hair to stimulate blood flow. I also deep condition twice a week with Byu-ti Hair Therapy Sublime Conditioner to keep the hair healthy between salon treatments. For lashes, I learned that the options are endless. Extensions, semipermanent lashes, one-night lashes and a nightly treatment to promote growth are all available (and great ways to add to a client’s ticket). I’ve tried every option. Lavish Lashes are extensions that last up to three months. At the Glitz Girls Brow and Make-up Studio in Beverly Hills, make-up artist Kristen Deasy applies Ardell lashes that last either one night or, with more intense glue, an entire weekend. Finally, after visiting Veronica at Veronica Skin Care in Malibu for a fabulous facial, I learned about Revitalash, a product that is applied to the lash line at night to promote growth. I’m loving all the options so much that I can’t decide. Good thing I have more time. West Coast Editor Alicia Marantz chatted with Joico’s Addam Moreno to get a professional’s take on Katie Holmes’ new “mom bob.” “It’s like that ‘chop-off-your-hair, you’re-a new-mom’ type of look, which is essentially where she is at in her life,” he says. “But the cut could have been stronger and still low maintenance.” Moreno feels that Holmes has beautiful angular features that this look covers up, with the long fringe falling in her face and sides that just hang down and get tucked behind her ears. “The cut lacks both shape and definition. It’s very tight in the back and then massive hair in the front,” he says. “The balance is off, and the style is ambiguous with her wave pattern.” Moreno’s suggestions; create stronger lines, cut more layers, shorten the fringe and leave the back an inch longer so that the hair hangs differently. When it comes to color, if Moreno had his way he would enhance her rich brown with a demipermanent color or a gloss in a warmer Level-4 red brown, then add a series of golden highlights ranging from Levels 6 to 8. 34 AUGUST 2007 Katie’s at Home www.modernsalon.com Photo by Jim Spellman/Wireimage.com http://www.SalonTechnologies.com http://www.SalonTechnologies.com http://ireimage.com http://www.modernsalon.com
